About this ebook
Colonel Bill Jackson has been a Galactic Marine for twenty-one years. His family lineage in the Marines stretches back to the old United States Marines of the nineteenth century. One of his relatives fought in a battle in a place called Iwo Jima. His father is an active duty three-star general working in the Galactic Marines Special Operations Center located in the Southeastern Sector of North America on Earth. Bills youth had been that of a military child moving from duty station to duty station. He heard the stories of his ancestors’ prowess in war and swelled with pride as his father and mother told the tales. On his 18th birthday he asked his father to give him permission to join the Galactic Marine Corps. Instead of permission his father offered him a deal that if he would attend the Naval Academy, he would give his approval. After graduating from the Naval Academy with an MBA/Tactical Theory he joined the Marines with his fathers’ approval. Like all modern Marines Bill started his journey into the Corps as an enlisted Marine. His marksmanship skills earned him a chance to become an elite sniper and he rapidly rose in the ranks. His entire career has been that of a sniper team commander in the Galactic Marine Corps.

CHAPTER 1
TROUBLE IN PARADISE
Major Bill Jackson sits in the brig seething over the gall of Commandant James Smith for placing him in confinement for decking the incompetent Colonel Noah Poindexter III. The fool cost the lives of most of a sniper/recon team on Calypso. He’s been fighting with the 45th Marine Expeditionary Team on the planet Calypso for 6 months against a tough insurgency. His 6’2" Marine frame contained all the military grade enhancements plus the MASAP (Marine Advanced Sniper Access Protocol). His vision enhancements and onboard CPU interact with all the military hardware the Galactic Marines field and the MASAP allows for target acquisition up to 5 miles with the Marine sniper rifle Long Range Rail Gun 98 (LRRG 98). However, in the cell a suppressor field disables the enhancements.
Bill has been a Galactic Marine for twenty-one years. Bill’s youth had been that of a military child moving from duty station to duty station.
His current troubles started when he assigned a sniper team to surveil a village thought to harbor insurgents. He ordered his Marine sniper team to remain undetected and not to approach the village under any circumstances. The intelligence on the village specified it would contain a reinforced company of crack insurgent troops and intelligence assets. He merely wanted the team to verify the intelligence and return to base where an attack plan would be developed. However, Colonel Noah Poindexter III, an officer with connections to the Senate on Earth who owed his rank to support from powerful senators, decided to intercede and send the sniper team to the outskirts of the village with orders to capture an insurgent. This led to the discovery and death of 3 team members who were tied to stakes outside the town as a warning. The surviving team members GySgt. William Cole (Bullseye) and his spotter SGT Mark Wilkins (Genius) told Bill what had transpired. His reaction of knocking Colonel Noah Poindexter III out cold in a fit of rage has him currently charged with assault.
Sgt. Wilkes, the cell block NCO, walks up to Bill’s cell door. Major Bill Jackson please come with me.
The Major stood and placed his hands through the food slot for the guard to place handcuffs on his wrist.
No need for that Major, a hero should never be handcuffed for protecting his Marines. That son of a bitch deserved more than you gave him. I’ve known some of those marines in that team since boot camp. Poindexter gave a stupid order that cost my friends their lives and I’ll put a bullet in him the first chance I get.
The MP opened the cell door and began walking out of the cell block.
Where are we going Sgt. Wilkes?
Bill asked as he caught up with the Sgt.
The Commandant asked me to bring you to his office. Your Marines are livid and near mutiny because of your incarceration.
Bill stood at attention in front of Commandant James Smith’s desk waiting for the Commandant to speak. Major Jackson at ease, I have a near mutiny on my hands. What do you think I should do to said officer who caused the mutiny?
The Commandant states with a very slight smile.
Commandant James Smith is a bear of a man whose skills in warfare are renowned. His weathered face and short black hair, peppered lightly with grey, bore witness to his time in the trenches. The Commandant’s face also carried a reminder of his combatant days. A ragged scar ran from his right ear to disappear below the collar of his BDU’s. He’s been a Marine for 50 years and in that time commanded troops in some of the most historic battles in Galactic Marine history. The battle for the planet Billings where he as a Colonel commanded a division of marines surrounded by 2 divisions of mercenaries was his crucible, he extracted his troops from the cordon and used combined forces tactics to send the attacking divisions running in disarray. He used supporting fire from orbital, artillery and atmospheric flight assets in a ballet that stunned the enemy. In that fight, he had rewritten the ground, air and orbital support manual. Major Jackson was one of the Commandant’s Lieutenants on that mission.
Well sir if the sorry excuse for an officer like Colonel Noah Poindexter III is the officer for which you speak, I would have him drawn and quartered,
Bill stated with only a slight grin.
Unfortunately, the grand Colonel has a lot of friends in high places which ties my hands, or I would do just that,
the Commandant states with a scowl. However, I have a plan to get you as far away from Earth as possible until this shit storm blows over. We’re in a nasty fight at H-252 located in the Perseus Galactic Arm. A mix of private mercenaries, pirates and Marxist insurgent armies have overthrown the legitimate republic government. I am giving you a combat promotion to Colonel, that way you can command the new division being deployed to the planet.
Nobody would volunteer for this slot, so I get the honor? Don’t get me wrong sir, I will be happy to go but that is the armpit of the republic,
Bill states with a wry smile.
"Yea, you’re correct. Nobody wanted this shit sandwich, timing was fortuitous for getting you to a safe location as Colonel Noah Poindexter III works his senate support into a frenzy. I must get you out ASAP or the senate could lock the punishment in and tie my hands further. And you are correct, I could not find a single Colonel to take the slot. The last two commanders were assassinated by some elite snipers I need you to eliminate. This is a very dangerous deployment and you will be given as much support as I can afford to send with you. I have also placed your sniper squad on the deployment schedule and you should use them as you see fit. I need you to create a deployment supply request so that I can get the supplies on the same ship taking you to H-252. You’ll be on the Tripoli/Wasp troop assault carrier with Captain Martha Franklin, she will be the task force commander. She will remain on station to give you orbital bombardment support and resupply capability. By the way, the Marines have nick named H-252
