GIOVANNI’S CHRISTMAS BRIDE - Pravina Maharaj

    Chapter One

Through sheets of rain , Brennan Shaw gazed at the magnificent mansion. The soft orange glow from the windows looked very inviting. Brennan wondered who the mansion belonged to, before beginning to fret about her broken-down vehicle. Of all the rotten luck, her car had to break down in the middle of a storm. This was the worst possible timing. How would she afford the car repairs? She was already two months behind on her rent. As a middle school English teacher, her salary was barely enough to make ends meet.

She glanced at her five-year old son Luca, sound asleep in his car seat, blissfully unaware of the raging storm and his mother’s anguish. Brennan couldn’t very well spend the night in her small car. She’d forgotten her mobile at her flat so she needed to get to a phone urgently. She let out a weary sigh. She had no choice but to ask the owner of the mansion for assistance. Grabbing a spare blanket, she covered her head and shoulders and stepped out the car. As the wind howled around her and the rain lashed at her mercilessly, she fervently prayed the owner of the mansion would agree to assist her.

GIOVANNI FERRUCCIO sipped his brandy as he turned the next page of a business contract he’d been perusing. There was a knock on the door of his library before it opened to reveal his butler, Christopher Jenkins.

Sir, my apologies for disturbing you. There’s a young woman at the gate who wants to be admitted inside. Her car has broken down and she would like to use a phone to call for a tow. The watchman says he ascertained that the woman is alone with only her young child.

The butler’s words were punctuated by a crack of thunder. Giovanni wondered which poor woman was out in such horrid weather with a child. Yes, of course. Please ensure that she and her child are made comfortable while they wait for the tow service.

Jenkins bowed stiffly, his craggy features impassive as always. Very well, sir.

Giovanni finished his brandy and set aside the contract. His concentration was broken and his thoughts strayed to the young woman in need. He rose to his feet, deciding he’d check on his unexpected visitor.

BRENNAN AND LUCA WERE ushered into the hallway of the mansion. She was met by a rotund woman with rosy cheeks who introduced herself as Mrs. Edna Rawlins, the housekeeper. She directed Brennan into a large drawing room with a crackling fire in the stone fireplace. A maid appeared with crisp white towels. Brennan dried herself as best she could and moved closer to the hearth, holding out her chilled hands. Luca sat on a rug beside her, staring around the room curiously.

Mrs. Rawlins patted his cheek. Such a cute little boy, she cooed. I bet he must be hungry. I’ll get him a glass of warm milk and something to eat.

Please, there’s no need to trouble yourself. I just want to use a phone to call for a tow service. I really don’t wish to inconvenience you any further, Brennan quickly said.

No trouble at all, Mrs. Rawlins replied. She gestured to a phone resting on a crimson Chinese cabinet. You can make your call. I’ll be right back with some hot drinks.

Brennan smiled, grateful for the woman’s kindness. She was about to pick up the phone when she felt a prickling of awareness along the nape of her neck. She looked up, stunned to see the man she’d never thought to face again. Not after five bitter years.

Giovanni Ferruccio. Italian billionaire, philanthropist and jet-setting playboy.

At thirty-five, Giovanni was one of the most eligible bachelors in New York. Brennan had followed his life and career through the media. She knew he was never short of female company—often seen with actresses, models, and wealthy heiresses.

As Giovanni’s dark gaze locked with hers, Brennan forgot to breathe. Her mind flew to ten years ago when they’d first met. She’d been a twenty-year-old waitress, paying her way through college. Giovanni had been twenty-five with a steely determination to succeed in the world of business. He’d just launched his first Information Technology Company and was in the process of expanding his business when they’d met.

Brennan’s life changed forever when Giovanni had stepped into the café where she worked. It was five days before Christmas on a snowy Saturday afternoon. Giovanni had insisted she sit with him while he had a coffee and pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream. Her boss at the café was shocked when Giovanni laid down a bundle of notes.

I’m buying more than your food and drink. I’m also buying the company of your pretty waitress, Giovanni had told the man, with an air of arrogance.

If it were any other customer, Brennan would have been incensed by such audacious behaviour but immediately there was something about Giovanni that tugged at her. It was more than his darkly handsome features or his Italian accent. She’d served many handsome men at the upmarket Manhattan café, but none had made her pulse race.

Intrigued by the stranger, Brennan agreed to sit down with him, and thereafter Giovanni began visiting the café often, always paying a small fortune for Brennan to sit with him. Their encounters fed the gossip mill of the restaurant staff and had the female staff mooning over Giovanni’s sex appeal.

Soon Giovanni began seeing Brennan away from the café. Brennan suddenly in a relationship with Giovanni discovered she was helplessly in love. She graduated from college and Giovanni was blazing his way through the business world. Then one Christmas Eve, Giovanni stunned her by proposing. It had been the happiest moment of Brennan’s life. But her happiness was short-lived because ten months later she broke off their engagement. Her world had come crashing down around her ears. Giovanni was left gutted by their breakup and Brennan’s heart broke into a million tiny pieces.

Brennan Shaw, Giovanni said, the deep timbre of his voice sending a shiver down Brennan’s spine and jerking her back to the present.

Welcome to my home, he added, sounding anything but
