Warring with the Warlords - J.F. King

    ––––––––CHAPTER 1

    Kem

I watched Kral fill his coinpurse from the stash he kept on his donkey.

He clapped his hands and the beast ran off, braying a short note of acknowledgment.

I said, I'll arm wrestle you for some of that.

Or you could just suck my cock.

I made a face. Not in front of the children.

Samon and Veeba still watched us with wary eyes. They couldn't have been more than eight years old.

Kral laughed gutturally. They saw us kill their parents, you think some coarse language is going to offend them?

    They're children.

It would've been better if you had let me do my business.

They're children. How callous can you be, friend?

He grunted. What do you need coin for? Just your books?

We were approaching the main gate of the town – the first one we had seen since we'd been in this cold land.

I'd like to have my own bedroll.

The warrior grimaced at me. Don't like sleeping under my blanket? I bathe every day.

I wouldn't mind some sleeping privacy every now and then.

He laughed. You monks. If you had your own bedroll, you'd be pleasuring yourself in secret.

    What's wrong with that?

Wrong? No, where's the fun in that?

We were at the gate. A single guard in a surcoat of white and black colors looked us over.

I stopped in front of him and his eyes narrowed. I nodded in benediction and said, We have two children from the countryside who now have no parents. Is there an orphanage here?

    Kral snorted behind me.

    I ignored him.

The guard's eyes flashed over the two children. There is. I can take charge of them here. He raised his voice, Barrik!

A young soldier came running out, adjusting his surcoat and wiping sleep from his eyes. Aye?

These two children to Master Wyeth. See to it.

    Aye.

I motioned for Samon and Veeba. This guard will see you to your new home.

    Kral snorted again.

I kicked his shin armor before we headed through the gate.

Whatever the name of the town was, it was well-spread out with plenty of space to walk and drive carts.

    I pointed to an inn.

Kral shook his head. Never the first one you see.

    Why?

    They charge more.

Maybe it would be worth it?

He gave me a glance pained with pity and patience. It wouldn't be.

I opened my mouth to keep arguing.

He interrupted me. When are you going to trust me?

I frowned at him. I do trust you.

Then shut up before I stick my cock in your mouth.

    I coughed. Rod.

He said loudly so several people nearby could hear, Cock, cock, cock. He shook his head. Silly monk.

A child ran ahead of us, scampering as fast as he could.

    Kral scowled. I'm not...

    What?

He was turning and scanning the people walking by. He pointed.

Following his finger, I caught glimpse of another child running along an ally. I said, What am I seeing?

The children. I don't like it.

    They're just running. Playing—

Alone? Looks like they're running somewhere.

    What's wrong with—

Beware. The steel in his voice stopped me.

Ahead was a man burly and tall, dirty and stinking like a piss-wall.

Kral stayed me with a hand. Don't hurt anyone, no matter what happens. We're strangers here.

I grasped his meaning. The local authority would likely believe their own citizens before they believed us.

People began to scatter, though a few more men came forward.

Piss-wall spat on the ground. We don't accept strangers here.

Kral spoke as if in good cheer. He pointed to the next inn to where we had been headed. I think your innkeepers might disagree.

He spat again. You're standing in my favorite spot. I think I'll have to take that pretty sword you have there as payment. He stepped forward, bouncing his hand palm up.

I turned my head both ways, counting the number of men that were hurrying forward to join the tightening ring around us. I said low, This doesn't look good.

His answer was pitched for my ears. I know, but it'll just be some rough up and a robbery. Put us in our place in their eyes. Don't hurt any of them.

I took a deep breath and settled my nerves.

    ––––––––CHAPTER 2

    Kral

I approached the stench-beast in front of us. I was aware of the monk hanging back a little, and that was good; he would have my back.

There was a scuffle behind me and a short cry. A man went tumbling through the air to my left and landed in the slush of the street.

    Stench-beast roared.

I lunged forward and drove my fist into his slimy gut. I growled, Shut up.

I ducked under his grasp and punched the closet man near him. Blood squirted from his nose and he spun away.

I could see Kem in my vision kicking and spinning and hauling on arms of those around him. Men went tumbling whenever they got close to my friend.

I dodged a fist from stench-beast and pounded
