About this series

When we wrote on the life of St. Teresa in our book "Saints and other Powerful Women in the Church," little did we think that we would some day, be using her visions of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory to affirm these important truths of our Catholic Faith. As we have said so many times, the lives of the Saints are not about old bones, long gone and forgotten, but alive in the lives they led, in their living examples of holiness and virtue for us to follow, in the path they have paved by the teachings they have left behind, as alive in a smaller degree as the Word of God found in Holy Scripture. As we delved into the many books on Heaven, Hell and Purgatory and combed Holy Scripture trying to discern what the Lord wanted in this book, we felt a haunting urgency to forge on despite many obstacles placed in our way, the kind of attacks mentioned by St. Teresa in her book, "Vida," (life) often good things or good people with good intentions. But as we discover, day after day in our walk with the Lord and His Mother, when the Lord wants something done, He will do anything and everything to have it come to pass, not excluding using our Guardian Angels to persistently plant His Thoughts and Will in our minds. And so here we are, and we are once again writing about one of our most loved and precious Saints and Doctors of the Church, (At the writing of this book, there are only 2 women Doctors of the Church - St. Teresa of Avila and St. Catherine of Siena (both of whom Bob and Penny have written about in their book: "Saints and other Powerful Women in the Church") Saint Teresa of Avila.

When Our Lord wants a message to get out to His Church, he raises up a powerful Saint to do the task. Such a Saint was Gertrude the Great! She was the one to plant the seed which would bloom through the hands of another powerful Saint and visionary, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, four centuries later, and subsequently through Saint Faustina Kowalska in the 20th Century, through the Mission of Divine Mercy. Our Lord's mandate to St. Gertrude was to herald devotion to His Most Sacred Heart. She came to us in the Thirteenth Century, a time of rampant heresy and glorious victory. The Lord promised that His Church, although besieged by persecution, would triumph in the end; in the Thirteenth Century, with His Infinite Humility, He raised up great Saints to bring this about. St. Gertrude received the title "the Great" partially because of the extraordinary gifts she received from the Lord, but we believe more for her total dedication to her Spouse Jesus.

"St. John Bosco, better known as Don Bosco, is one of the great apostles of the Nineteenth Century. His ministry was to the children of Turin, in Northern Italy, victims of the Industrial Revolution in that country at that time. Don Bosco was God's gift to the Church of that century. The magnetism of Don Bosco reached out and touched souls all over the world. He was one of the most multi-faceted diamonds, the Lord has ever given us. In addition to being a pied-piper to the young, attracting them, embracing them, protecting them, guiding them, he founded a Religious Order, was an author, a super church-builder, as well as a visionary and prophet." While there are so many cuts in the diamond we call St. John Bosco, so many aspects of the life and ministry of St. John Bosco that we could write about, we want to limit ourselves in this book to his visions and dreams, his prophecies of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Most of these were connected with his ministry to the children of his oratory; but we can all take lessons from these messages he received from the Lord. We're going to paraphrase the dream, because there is just so much to cover, but we do recommend you read more about him.
