Gem Magic Adventure - Russell Bernstein
Chapter 1
Norman and his father had been walking for what seemed like miles now. There was no more of that dangerous creature from before, but Norman couldn't help but feel on guard the entire time. He didn't understand how a creature that size had nearly sneaked up on them. He could see for miles in all directions. Maybe it crouched in the grass, stalking its prey. That was an unnerving thought for a creature that size to be able to jump out at any moment.
Norman wanted to go home. He wanted to see his mother. He wanted to play hide-and-go-seek in the gardens of his home with his sister, back on Earth, back on what was familiar. This alien planet made Norman more scared than even his curiosity could handle. He was scared for his sister and what she might be going through.
There was a forest up ahead. Trees shot up into the sky as if trying to pierce the clouds with their branches. Monstrously thick trees bunched together, each tree filled with leaves, creating a beautiful canopy. The leaves were huge, more vibrant than any on Earth Norman had seen.
They drew closer to the forest. That is where his father held up.
The footprints lead toward the forest. She must have tried to look for shelter and food,
his father said.
Norman nodded, ready to run into the woods if his father asked.
There are creatures in there, dark and hideous beasts, especially in the night.
His father took out some stones from his pocket. A quick lesson, so listen up.
Norman edged closer to listen.
Emerald stones, like the one I used for the log, are for nature spells. Anything that has to do with Mother Nature can be created with emeralds.
He held up the emerald for emphasis.
Next he held up the ruby. Rubies are for fire spells. Be careful with these. Although powerful, they are difficult to control and contain. Don't use these unless you absolutely have to. I wouldn't try to heat my soup with one of these.
He quickly held up a blue sapphire. These are for water related magic.
His father held out all four colored stones. You will slowly learn the boundaries and capabilities of each stone's power. For now, try to stick with simple spells. State what you want and then throw the stone onto the ground with enough power to shatter it. You must break the stone for the power to be released.
His father began to walk and then stopped. And remember,
he said turning back. Use them sparingly. We only have a few. We need at least one black stone to return home. Do not forget that!
They started their march again, heading toward the tree line. His father quickened his pace and Norman almost had to jog to keep up.
The forest was quiet, no
