About this ebook

Rob Treutlen lives in a cage, just like everyone else on Earth. The Reptilian Empire constructed the Lattice around the planet, and they persistently demand more work from their captives. Rob hates it, but he has an ailing father to care for, and he can't afford to get involved with the resistance.

His father's death changes that. He seeks out the resistance and attempts to escape the Lattice. It's dangerous, and his probability of success is low, but he's willing to risk it. Because having nothing left to live for makes some things worth dying for.

The Lattice is a 6300-word short story.

Thank you for downloading this ebook. All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

The Reptilian Empire has increased its steel requirements by four percent, the reporter on the news show said, its manganese requirements by two percent, and its silicon requirements by one percent. Factories all over the world are already trying to adjust to the new demands.

Lizards are sucking us dry! Charles Treutlen yelled from his usual seat on the sofa, shaking his gnarled fist at the television.

I know, Dad, Rob said. He gathered up his father's plate and cup from his tv tray. But there's nothing we can do about it. Why don't we change the channel? Maybe there's a game show on. He picked up the remote and switched to the game show channel.

Game show. Yeah. Mindy likes game shows. Maybe she'll watch with me when she gets back.

Maybe she will. Rob carried his father's breakfast dishes to the kitchen. His mother had indeed loved game shows, but she had also been dead for twenty-two years. He put the dishes in the sink and returned to the living room.

This English engineer, the game show host said, is famous for reformulating Maxwell's equations into—

Oliver Heaviside! Charles shouted, pointing at the television.

Rob smiled. Before the dementia, his dad had been like an intellectual version of a Titan of old, a real-life hero of engineering and industrial design. His mind's decay had begun not long after his wife's death.

It still hurt Rob to think about his mother. He had just been a teenager when she committed suicide. And then his father had his first breakdown. Rob had been forced to take care of him, and his own life's ambitions, including college and having a family of his own,
