Author’s Note
Here I am writing my first Authors note, I am no professional but I am sincere.
I am content as well as nervous, the journey of writing this book is something I have no words to express and there were times I wanted to give up but something within me kept persuading me to finish it... I hope something in you keeps persuading you to read it.
It’s a work of fiction, but might not remain a fiction forever, you never know!!
****
She found it hard to get back to sleep, around 3 am she was lying awake in her bed, trying to get out of the nightmare she had. Her body was trembling and there were drops of perspiration on her face...
It was the beginning of winter, October 1988, but the cool wind could not help her stop sweating.
The rest of the early morning was then spent turning and tossing until dawn; there she lay awake seeing the sun rise at her window.
Dorothy...
she heard the familiar voice at the door, forcing herself out of bed she opened the door at early 6 , finding her guardian parent Ms. Jessica Pears, who was already fuming red ,
You always got ways to upset me, you clumsy girl
...Jessica said,
The very next instant she gave one tight slap on Dorothy’s cheek and walked off.
‘Dorothy understood what her so called mother was taking about. She had forgotten to iron her white uniform; she had handed to her the previous night.
––––––––
"Jessica worked as a nurse, at Nainital hospital; she was in her late thirties, the beautiful feature she had was her vivid blue eyes with a sparkle in them, apart from that, the rest was average, a round face, button like nose, a narrow chin and brown curly hair that could not be tamed.
‘Jessica was a lonely lady, having only ‘Dorothy, in her life for some reason she could not build a caring or understanding relationship with Dorothy; her adopted child.
Jessica had a fixed daily routine from work to home and vice- versa, apart from that her shift timings kept changing.
‘She served three shift as per the standard shifts at hospitals, that’s day, evening and night. She seldom visited people and had no social life. She was a regular church attendant. She confessed whenever there was an opportunity that would reduce the burden on her soul...
––––––––
"Stepping out of the bathroom after a hot steaming bath, Jessica got ready to leave to the hospital her uniform was ironed and was lying at the dressing table at the corner of her room, for a moment she recollected how hard she had been on Dorothy this morning.
Carefully she packed her uniform in a large leather bag she carried to work; mostly nurses would dress at the hospitals in their nursing attire
‘She had a bite of the garlic butter toast and sip of hot tea served already at the breakfast table; she ate the rest in a few moments, and gulped down the tea as she saw the clock strike 7.30 am, she had to report to the hospital by 8am.
––––––––
"Dorothy saw the two wheeler vehicle draw out of the parking lot from the window;
Jessica had left to the hospital, she was alone at home she had a long list of jobs to be done at home like sweeping the floor, moping the rooms, having the clothes washed in the washing machine then dried and pressed. Cleaning utensils and the list went on... she picked up the broom kept at the rack that lay in a wooden compartment behind the main door, and began sweeping the floor.
The doorbell rang....
Peeping through the eye hole on the door she saw Nichole Cruz waiting at the door, her heart skipped a beat...
"Dorothy had admired him since the first year of her graduation,
"He had been studying in the same grade with her, he was a handsome enough to be a young movie star, with a good athletic body; eyes that were dark black and spiked hair that perfectly suited his face, adding to the admiration on his face were his deep dimples that highlighted his cheeks whenever he smiled....
They had met on the first day of college, when Dorothy was busy finding for her class and carelessly bumped into him; she hastened and picked the books that fell on the floor, without even having a glance at the person she went ahead...
Finding her class she relaxed her breath that was high, climbing a three story building.
‘As she eased herself sipping water from the bottle, she saw a face smiling at her seated two seats ahead of her, towards her right, he looked no familiar and she immediately broke the eye contact.
––––––––
‘The rest of the lecture went without even her mere attention.
‘As the lecture was over she packed her stuff, as there was an announcement of no more lectures that day, in the corridor outside she saw the same smiling face again. Though it was hard to resist, she walked over as if she had hardly noticed...
"Excuse me...
She heard a voice sharp and friendly at the same time; addressing her...
‘Dorothy turned back and it was him.
He smiled and said
You got my book in your hand, can I have it please.
Surprised... she looked down and saw the book she was holding with the Name:
Nichole Cruz."
She immediately handed out the book to him and started to walk; a few steps and she realized she had bumped into him this morning.
"She could have apologized or thanked either of it to have some conversation, but like a dumb she just walked off..She turned around to have a glance, and her eyes examined the long corridor, but he had disappeared.
Heading back home; waiting for the local transport to arrive at the bus stop, her mind rehearsing the incident at college.....
Dorothy opened the door, Nichole entered in the living room, and he looked even better closer ....The scent of his perfume was mesmerizing.
He had come in to see her and update her on some of the college schedule as she didn’t attend college for a couple of days.
How are you? Dorothy
Me fine, had some bad headaches but I am doing fine now....
"That’s nice; I just
