About this ebook
What if Modrad, Kasig, and Farfiz’s return home didn’t go as originally planned? What if unexpected events blocked their way, forcing them to take an alternate, possibly more dangerous, course? The Cleanser, which continues the Vargrom series, pursues this very scenario. While it acts as a companion piece to Vargrom: Modrad’s Exile, it is also a stand-alone story that newcomers can enjoy. It’s an adventure filled with pirates, goblins, dragons, magic, and more.

THE CLEANSER
PART ONE: SERELL
CHAPTER ONE
The boy hadn’t spoken since his twin left. Serell didn’t have children of his own, but he and Didah hoped to change that soon, right after the two were married. Their special day awaited, still a few months away. Serell lowered his axe and eyed the child. Filth covered Erbas’ face, hiding the boy’s milky white skin. Stacking the wood neatly, he gave no mind to Serell.
You could have left with your brother,
Serell said.
Erbas turned, his russet eyes meeting Serell’s gaze. The boy shrugged.
You’re not much of a talker,
Serell said. Feeling no need to respond, Erbas went back to piling wood. No matter. You do good work. If I wanted conversation, I could go to the tavern.
Erbas didn’t reply, but Serell noticed a slight grin when the boy bent over to retrieve another log.
Serell!
The voice came from the woods.
Weaving through a maze of trees, a man made his way into the clearing.
What is it, Drann?
Serell said.
Though they weren’t related, Drann looked as if he could be Erbas’ father. Brown eyes. Brown hair. Light complexion.
It’s Rarfaed,
Drann said. He’s pinned under a tree.
Rarfaed was the only one in town clumsy enough to have a tree topple down on him. Accidents seemed to be a common occurrence with him.
Serell glanced at Erbas.
No reaction.
The boy was truly an enigma.
If you are here when I return,
he said to Erbas, I will pay you for the day’s work. If not, I will stop by your house later.
Erbas smiled and nodded.
Serell slid the axe handle through a ring in his belt and followed Drann. Late autumn had brought cool and damp conditions, and leaves were scattered everywhere as Serell picked up the pace. Sunlight crept through the forest canopy as the two of them made haste. Before long, Serell spotted Rarfaed in the distance.
A medium-sized oak tree rested across Rarfaed’s legs. Serell, close to seven feet in height and weighing over two-hundred-and-seventy-five pounds, could do just about anything when it came to feats of strength, which is why the townspeople often beckoned him when certain problems arose.
How are you?
Serell joked.
Drann stood next to him.
Get this blasted thing off me,
Rarfaed said. The middle-aged man puffed, the breath ruffling his frizzy gray beard and leaving a vapor trail in the chilly morning air.
I am glad you are well,
Serell said. I thought I might find you dead by the time I arrived.
There’s still time for that,
Rarfaed said.
Serell stepped over the trunk, situating himself alongside Rarfaed. He bent his knees, squatted, and curled his forearms around the bottom of the tree. Serell lifted and slowly straightened out, his biceps burning by the time he stood upright. Taking quick, shallow breaths, he managed to move forward a few strides before dropping the
