About this ebook

“You will find it hard to believe that there stood at one time a fiercely-flourishing little city, of two thousand or three thousand souls, with its newspaper, fire company, brass band, volunteer militia, bank, hotels, noisy Fourth of July processions and speeches—all the appointments and appurtenances of a thriving and prosperous and promising young city—and now nothing is left of it all but a lifeless, homeless solitude.
-Mark Twain-

    Seeing the Elephant:

You will find it hard to believe that there stood at one time a fiercely-flourishing little city, of two thousand or three thousand souls, with its newspaper, fire company, brass band, volunteer militia, bank, hotels, noisy Fourth of July processions and speeches—all the appointments and appurtenances of a thriving and prosperous and promising young city, —and now nothing is left of it all but a lifeless, homeless solitude. The men are gone, the houses have vanished, even the name of the place is forgotten. In no other land, in modern times, have towns so absolutely died and disappeared, as in the old mining regions of California

    -Mark Twain-

What began as a hobby for me, one that I thoroughly enjoy doing, exploring the foothills and mountains of the Northern Sierra region of California, looking for places that once were thriving towns during the Gold Rush, eventually dying out and vanishing, has now blossomed into this book. This is the first one in a planned series of books covering places I have researched and then found

At the end of each account you’ll find GPS coordinates that will help you find where the town once existed, but even with that help, you might (as I did) need to explore a little, which in my estimation makes the whole experience more enjoyable.

If you don’t live in the area, don’t like or not able to physically explore, try Google Earth where you can vicariously search for the places I write about using the GPS coordinates. . .
