    About this series

    Between 2016 and 2020 the federally funded project "KONDE - Kompetenznetzwerk Digitale Edition" created a network of collaboration between Austrian institutions and researchers working on digital scholarly editions. With the present volume the editors provide a space where researchers and editors from Austrian institutions could theorize on their work and present their editing projects. The collection creates a snapshot of the interests and main research areas regarding digital scholarly editing in Austria at the time of the project.

      Der hier vorliegende vierte Band der Reihe zu Kodikologie und Paläographie im digitalen Zeitalter versammelt Beiträge aus der Forschung im interdisziplinären Schnittfeld traditioneller Geisteswissenschaften und Informatik. Er ist zugleich der Tagungsband der in den Jahren 2014 bis 2016 durchgeführten Veranstaltungsreihe "Maschinen und Manuskripte". Die 13 Beiträge aus den Bereichen der digitalen Kodikologie und Paläographie geben Einblicke in aktuelle computergestützte Forschung mit historischen Schriftzeugnissen und schließt Untersuchungen zu Bildern und zur musikalischen Notation ein. Der thematische Rahmen spannt sich dabei von der Erforschung digitalisierter Sammlungen mittels automatischer Mustererkennung über die Erfassung und Analyse von Schrift und Zeichensystemen bis zur Informationsvisualisierung von Forschungsdaten. The present fourth volume of the series on codicology and palaeography in the digital age features articles on research at the interdisciplinary intersection of the fields of traditional humanities and computer science. At the same time it represents the proceedings of the conference series "Machines and Manuscripts" held from 2014 to 2016. The 13 contributions from the field give insights on current computer aided research with historical written documents including images and musical notation. The thematic framework ranges from exploration of digitized collections to recognition and analysis of script and sign systems to information visualisation of research data.

      Interfaces are important elements of digital scholarly editions as they allow and direct the interaction of users with the online content and they facilitate the access to and exchange of data and information. Some interfaces are created for the human user (GUI), others for machine interaction and data exchange (API). Both aspects of interfaces and their roles in digital scholarly editing were discussed at a conference in 2016 organised by the Centre for Information Modelling at the University of Graz and the Digital Scholarly Editions Initial Training Network DiXiT. This volume includes a range of papers presented at the conference that highlight the diverse views and approaches towards interfaces in the digital scholarly editing community.

      This volume approaches an understanding of the term versioning in the broadest sense, discussing ideas about how versions differ across forms of media, including text, image, and sound. Versions of cultural objects are identified, defined, articulated, and analysed through diverse mechanisms in different fields of research. The study of versions allows for the investigation of the creative processes behind the conception of works, a closer inspection of their socio-political contexts, and promotes investigation of their provenance and circulation. Chapters in this volume include discussion of what a "version" means in different fields, case studies implementing digital versioning techniques, conceptual models for representing versions digitally, and computational and management issues for digital projects.

      Der Begriff der Rekontextualisierung hat in neueren diskursanalytischen Forschungen zu digitalen Medien einen erstaunlichen Aufschwung erfahren. Die für digitale Medien charakteristische Möglichkeit, durch serielle Reihung, Rekombination, Einbettung und Vernetzung digitaler Objekte neuen Sinn zu generieren, wird dadurch auf den Begriff gebracht. Digitale Phänomene wie Memes, Hashtags und interaktive Timelines liefern anschauliche Beispiele. Aber nicht nur auf der Gegenstandsebene erweist sich der Begriff als nützliche Analyseketagorie. Auch methodologische Fragestellungen zu digitalen Forschungsinfrastrukturen und digitalen Methoden etwa nach dem epistemologischen Status von digitalen (Parallel-)Editionen oder Wortkonkordanzen können mit Begriff der Rekontextualisierung adressiert werden. Die Beiträge im Band diskutieren aus linguistischer, literatur- und geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive die Potenziale und Anschlussmöglichkeiten wie auch die theoretischen und empirischen Implikationen des Rekontextualisierungsbegriffs als Grundbegriff digitaler Forschung.
