About this ebook

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same ambition in each other. A shared interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl with a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the arch-nemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end? “Supremely plotted and incredibly well-written.” The Independent on Sunday “Vicious is the superhero novel I've been waiting for: fresh, merciless, and yes, vicious.” Mira Grant, New York Times bestselling author “Schwab writes with the fiendish ingenuity, sardonic wit, and twisted imagination of a true supervillian.” Greg Cox, New York Times “A dynamic and original twist on what it means to be a hero and a villain. A killer from page one... Highly recommended!” Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author “Schwab gathers all the superhero/supervillain tropes and turns them on their sundry heads... I could not put it down.” F. Paul Wilson, New York Times bestselling author

A superhero zombie book. I found the writing surprisingly clunky for such a well-known author. Half way through, it is pretty obvious where the plot is going to go, so I am putting it aside unless advised by you folks to pick it up again.

wow this was a great book! very very very well written with great character development and a really interesting concept. V.E. Schwab is amazing. I loved how the past and present were interwoven throughout the novel and the different perspectives we got. there's something I can't quite put my finger on that is stopping me from giving it a higher rating but I really enjoyed it and overall 3/5 stars

V E Schwab can do no wrong with me! I am in love with everything she writes ever since my first reading of her work! It magical, mystical and devious. Just when you think you have a character pegged, her writing twists them into something you never saw coming; hover, still within the realm of her created worlds. I LOVE this book - but why it gotta be $30 bucks for a hard cover - OUCH

this is one of those life-changing books. it's just so intriguing and original and creative and smart and every positive adjective you can think of. i've read it twice now and it still surprises me at times, and the ending just catches me off guard every time.
but of course the characters are the real stars here, and i love them so very much, especially victor, who is i think the most morally grey character i've found in a book so far. he's not a good person per say, even at the beginning, and his motives aren't exactly the purest, but the one thing i find really interesting is that, you have the choice of whether you want to sympathize with him or not. personally, he's my favourite and i root for him and i love him, but i think it wouldn't take away from the story at all if i were to hate him. that's a really unique thing that i haven't really found in any other books.
i really loved the time-jumping, it's not something i've encountered very often, but i think it really gave a lot to the story, and it just fit so well with the atmosphere and the writing style, which is definitely one of my favourites like ever. and i guess this can be considered a superhero book, but it definitely doesn't feel like it, it just feels so real and logical and something that could absolutely happen.
it's really hard for me to express my feelings when it comes to this book, but i just love it so much.

how do i even begin. this book is absolutely incredible. the premise is original but still believable, the writing style is so different and beautiful and just a pleasure to read and the characters are all fleshed out. reading this book was an experience that changed my life, and i will definitely be reading more of Schwab's work.

Ten years ago Victor and Eli were in College and they had a theory that with a near-death experience they could trigger superheroic abilities, they experiment on themselves and find that a lot of things are possible. However during Victor's experiment there are tragic consequences which lead Eli to believe that he should kill those with powers and lands Victor in Jail. 10 years later Victor escapes and is bent on revenge. Some who gain power are driven mad by it and some are made too arrogant. This looks carefully at power and revenge and the terrible things people can do to each other. Looking forward to more in this world.

3.5 stars I liked how the book is structured with the story told from different points in time. The ending was worth the read even though throughout the book there very repetitive parts. kind of surprisingly, I found Eli's character a bit flat. There was a bit too much reliance on one aspect of his character. He didn't get much of a backstory. While that made him mysterious, it was also frustrating. But overall, I enjoyed the read. It was nice to read about morally ambiguous characters.

Vicious is an apt title indeed! This is a dark tale of two college buddies who set out to prove how a superhero is made but they don't anticipate the tragedy that comes of their experimentations. What follows is a story of vengeance. In my opinion, this books peeks at brilliance but never quite makes the cut. It could have been so much more. It does have some morbidly funny moments but I expected so much more for some reason.

Victor and Eli are college room mates (friends would be pushing it). After Eli picks the study of people with extraordinary abilities, or EOs, as his subject, Victor suggests to go one step further and actually create an EO. What follows is the story of how Victor and Eli turned into mortal enemies. This novel is quite unlike any other superhero novel you've ever read as it turns the notions of 'hero' and 'villain' completely on their heads; there is no clear-cut good or evil here, of white or black, only shades of grey. Along with the characters' shifting sense of morality, your allegiance as a reader to them will also shift several times throughout the book, with no clear winner at the end. The set-up of alternating events from a recent with those of a more distant past takes a little getting used to, but as each chapter illuminates part of the characters' personalities or background, I felt this worked better than having each thread told chronologically; towards the end, the reader has caught up to events and is treated to an epic show-down finale. The chapters are short, and it is thanks to the author's gift for characterization that Eli and Victor, and the other individuals that play a larger part in the novel and Eli and Victor's story, come across as larger-than-life, complex but also deeply flawed characters, and most of them aren't at all likeable. I could tell that the author has lived on a diet of comic book heroes brought to the big screen, as the whole novel has a cinematic scope to it, but for me it is ultimately too dark and violent to be re-read.

Ok, I'll preface this with the admission: I think Victoria is one of the nicest, most genuine authors I've ever had the pleasure to interact with. She creates wonderful, complex worlds, where there are no cardboard characters. Everyone has a good side and a bad side, and the world is made of shades. It's wonderful! Devoured in about a day, and that was me exercising a LARGE dose of restraint and leaving it at work overnight on purpose so I could draw out the pleasure.

I just wish it were longer.

    Moar plz? :P
(Also, I spotted at least one Doctor Who reference in this book, and it made me SO happy!)

Who is a hero? Who is a villain? Well the author of this book is both hero and villain. A hero for writing such a brilliant book a villain for making me stay up to past midnight just so I could finish it.What is the difference between hero and villain is something you will ask yourself constantly throughout the book. I asked myself several times which out of the two friends Eli and Victor was which. It is an answer that you could debate for hours after the book. There is so much to like about this book it is hard to quantify them all. The fact the author that I believe is female is as addicted to marvel superhero's as myself. The short quick chapters that change timeframe and give you all the background on the characters. You just want to keep reading to see what has happened to these characters and how their lives develop. The character development of these characters is the real strength of this book. Not just the two lead characters but the supporting cast. They are all well developed and likeable flaws and all. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am definitely going to be looking for more from this author. If you like superhero's, good character development and a good story that is quick and easy to read then I must urge you to pick this up. "Victor was the first to speak, and when he did, it was with an eloquence and composure perfectly befitting the situation."

Victor and Eli were best friends during college. They were rivals in everything and shared a common ambition to put their research into practice. Systematically playing with death they were able to become ExtraOrdinary, gaining amazing abilities once only attributed to superheroes. Ten years have passed since then. Victor has just broken out of prison and is determined to get revenge against Eli for putting him there. Meanwhile Eli has been enacting his zealous mission of ridding the world of other EOs by personally hunting them down. Vicious is a compelling tale that explores the darkness of jealousy, revenge, death, and morality. There is no clear hero or villain and both main characters are wonderfully flawed. I loved the story's prose and found it thoroughly engaging. It was vividly descriptive with concise word usage often found in short stories which enabled it to invoke the sense of a graphic novel. The story is set in the near future on a parallel world where super powers are conceivable. It's told through short alternating chapters that weave the past and present together from different perspectives. I appreciated that each chapter was clearly labeled and I liked the graphic design details included in the book's formatting. It made the overall story easier to follow and heightened the suspense in the second part by emphasizing the countdown.I liked how the characters were portrayed. I enjoyed reading how they navigated through the dark themes within their different story lines. I really liked the concept behind how they became ExtraOrdinary and the different ways their powers manifested.Vicious is an engaging story with dark undertones, vivid prose and dramatic characters.

I think I expected a bit more from this book than it delivered. The majority of the story ranged between a 2 to a 2.5 star read for me.

I certainly get a few of the draws of this book. I liked the absence of the standard love triangle, square, irregular hexagon, you name it. I liked the absence of Squeaky Clean Boy, the hero made of sprinkles and sunshine. Schwab offers up clearly outlined antiheroes.

However, it just didn't grab me. For one, the antiheroes were each like a mixed bag of villain-ish spare parts without any background layers of psychology or history to flesh them out. For another, even the better parts didn't seem to really break through to me. There was so much there to pull from, it's really a good idea for a book. But it had a flatness to it that dampened so much of its possible effect.

I can't say that I'll be awaiting the second part with any real anticipation.

While the pacing feels like a YA novel, these are definitely Adult Questions she's grappling with. And I don't mean "Adult" as in "Naked", but Real Questions about what does it mean to be a hero, a villain. What does it mean to Do Good? Where does the desire for revenge come from. Larger than life without being Cartoonish.

A fast paced gripping read. The chapters are short, and punchy throughout so you will not get bored. The characterisation in the novel is brilliant. It is not a flowery read. It certainly made me wince in parts, and don't expect much in the way of descriptive prose of settings, etc. It left me with a sense of disappointment when the novel ended but I think this is just the very nature of the novel, however it would end would leave you with an empty feeling, a bit like a rollercoaster halting, you've taken the ride of a lifetime but now it ends. I have had several thoughts about the ending. I had doubts about it at first, but I came to the conclusion that it would be a brilliant ending cinematically, (the ending is very visual, and graphic), I can just see this becoming a film, it has so much potential. I would really recommend reading this if you like a fast paced exciting read with excellent characters throughout.

This is a book about two enemy villains with super powers. Of course, one or both may at times argue that he is the good guy, but honestly, both main characters are very terrible people. That is probably what I found most interesting about the book. Throughout the novel, we learn the motivations and thought process behind their actions. I felt a real sense of dread leading up to their final confrontation, and not knowing how everything was going to resolve itself kept me interested to the final page.

Unexpected and very entertaining, the reactions this book will elicit run the gamut from laughter to horror. Schwab also keeps the reader guessing about who the protagonist is and where the story is heading. Vicious is a book about people who develop extraordinary powers and abilities, but it is not a "superhero" story. (She plays with those tropes, however, in unique and engaging ways.) It is a great new take on an old theme, and an exciting find in a genre that too often thrives on repetition. If you haven't read it yet---get going already!

Superhero fiction seems to be full of fresh and fun ideas these days, and Vicious is no exception, taking a familiar idea and going to new places with it. There was a huge surge of interest in this book among my bookworm friends recently, which is admittedly how I decided to give this title another look after having shelved it as a "maybe". What a wonderful thing word-of-mouth is, or else I wouldn't have had the pleasure of reading this great novel, and I hope by adding my praises to the chorus that someone else will be inspired to pick this up too and experience the awesomeness for themselves. At its heart, Vicious is a fascinating look into the dynamics of an unconventional friendship. Still, you can't throw a couple of intelligent, ambitious and overachieving college students into the same classroom without expecting some jealousy and a bit of friendly competition...that is, unless you're Victor and Eli, a pair of roommates who take this game to a whole other level. It begins with a senior thesis. Eli, to the surprise of his professor and fellow classmates, chooses to research "EOs", or ExtraOrdinary humans with special abilities. Meanwhile, Victor decides to explore adrenaline responses. The two young men realize their interests mesh, however, when they discover a link between near-death experiences and the process of a person developing superpowers thus becoming an EO. And so, speculation leads to experimentation, experimentation leads to disaster, and ten years later we find Victor breaking out of prison on a mission of revenge to kill his one time roommate and friend. What ever did happen between them, you ask? The book unravels that mystery slowly, alternating between the present and the past, slowly revealing the events that led to Victor and Eli's falling out and becoming archenemies. Time skips done in this way are notoriously hard to pull off, and at times the jumps between chapters feel somewhat distracting and sporadic, but ultimately the story comes together in a way that ramps up the suspense in the climax and ending. The plot's pacing will keep you constantly wondering, guessing, and chomping through the pages. It's also been a while since I read a book with such interesting relationships between the characters. I think anyone who has ever known a "frenemy" can understand or relate somewhat; Schwab does an excellent job exploring those emotions and interactions when Victor and Eli are still roommates in college. Yet the relationship between them in ten years' time is something altogether different and even more complex. I've never encountered a story where the lines between "hero" and "villain" are more blurred. You know how they say the bad guy never believes they're bad? Ultimately you might not even decide to root for anyone, but that certainly doesn't make the characters any less compelling. Finally, I adored Vicious' concept of EOs. What a dark spin on the superhero "origins" tradition. And here we thought radioactive spider bites, random chemical accidents and cosmic disasters were traumatic. What if in order to become a superhero, you had to experience a near-death experience, to actually die and somehow make it back? I would have loved to see more about EOs in the context of the book's greater world; after all, they have to be more than just a myth in the eyes of the populace if even small town police forces dedicate the resources and manpower to maintain EO experts on staff. Anyway, check this one out. I'm glad it was recommended to me, and I'd like to pay it forward and recommend it to others too. Vicious ranks high among the most unique and addictive books I've ever read.

I enjoyed this Urban Fantasy/Horror story.

Two college students theorize how to create "EO"s or ExtraOrdinary people: People with super powers. Then they take the next step and create several EOs - themselves.

The rest of the book is a thriller, good vs evil. Super Hero vs Super Villain, with no certainty that one will win over the other.

Vicious by V.E.Schawb is an erudite exploration of the hero mythos and a gripping revenge thriller that truly begins when a college experiment goes awry.

Victor Vale and Elliot Cardale are college roommates who recognise their shared ambition of research on the possibility that with adrenaline and near-death experiences, under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities and become and ExtraOrdinary (EO). But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor, an EO has escaped from prison and accompanied by an orphaned girl, with a life-altering ability, he begins to track down Eli, his now foe. Eli, also an EO, meanwhile, is eliminating every EO – finding them to be against God’s will, except his companion, an enigmatic woman with mind-bending abilities.

Armed with unbelievable super powers on both sides, driven by betrayal and losses, and the bullish need for revenge, the arch-nemesis are set for a final showdown. But, who will emerge as the hero and the villain?

Vicious takes on the canon of superheroes with a much needed ‘hit you in the crotch and spit you on the neck’ fantastic twist and boils it down to the parable where the lines between good and evil are increasingly blurred.

“Someone could call themselves a hero and still walk around killing dozens. Someone else could be labeled a villain for trying to stop them.”

    Victor
The story narrates itself with a slow pace and deliberation, forcing you to remember everything you’ve read as the chapters flow in a non-linear format. Between the past and the present and everything in between — the result can be a little disorienting, but it makes for a thrilling read. As the plot unfolds, secrets are revealed and lies are caught. Machiavellian plans are put in place, and the characters come into their own, embracing their true natures as they confront each other face to face.

Schawb has left those little bread crumbs for you to pick up on, but nothing prepares you for the end!

I let out a shriek of disbelief and then a fist pump of joy, because I believed the nice villain won.

But, Victor and Eli aren’t heroes nor are they villains. They are, in fact, two EOs, who are making very specific choices. Petty and with grandiose belief that they are serving the greater good in their actions, these complex men look at their violence as the means to an end, an end where each one can continue on their chosen path to save the world — Eli by killing all the EOs and Victor in thwarting his efforts.

Schawb does a masterful job of giving her characters moments of vulnerability, envy, and insecurity and by infusing that little bit of humanity in Victor and Eli, she makes their journey from friends to enemies believable. The toxic motivation to outdo each other, to be each other’s villain and hero interchangeably, leads these two characters down a path of self-destruction. Something, which is truly relatable.

Even the supporting characters — Mitch with his unlucky streak, Sydney with her naive outlook on life and Serena, a sedate yet dangerous woman, all truly complete the massive circus that is the pissing competition between Victor and Eli.

Nothing is truly white and black in Vicious, the many shades of grey that colour the novel truly make you make you appreciate Schwab’s work in giving the hero vs villain trope a new lease of life.

A new perspective, or rather a more appropriate perspective, since you really can’t identify a hero by his clothes anymore nor can you identify a villain by his actions.
