Betwixt a Wolf and a Hard Place - Caroline Hanson

My name is Megan Stephens, and I’m a witch. I get paid to create spells and solve problems. Sometimes there are mysteries to solve, occasionally it’s dangerous…and I love it. Time goes by quickly, and everything is always a matter of life and death. At least that’s how it seems to the clients. Truthfully, it’s almost never life or death.

Problems are more of the Help, I have a wart on the end of my nose and prom is tomorrow! or Help! My boyfriend has terrible breath and the sex is awful, but he’s loaded, and I don’t want to break up! than actual, literal death.

And I can make that wart go away, or make that girl want to have sex with her yucky boyfriend. I get to meet people, hear their problems, have a pleasant schadenfreude moment of thinking, "thank crap that’s not my problem," and then I not only fix the problem and earn their eternal gratitude, but I get paid for it, too.

It’s awesome. So awesome that I wound up getting a werewolf boyfriend out of the last case. His name is Zack, and he’s a hot-as-hell CEO by day and a glorified dog by night. He has dark brown hair, is tall, of course, and he has broad shoulders. The sort of shoulders that fill doorways and have their own zip code when described in cheesy romance novels. All that wolftastic running through the forest helps keep him looking like a CW actor. All werewolves run in the woods. I try not to think about what else he does in the woods. I mean, peeing on trees is just a given but that’s as far as I go.

I’m sure there’s no licking of private parts. Ever. Hopefully.

Anyway, Zack runs his own company and spends a lot of time going to charity galas and being Mr. Emotionally Restrained. He doesn’t seem to identify with the canine part of his personality all that much. Would he choose to be human if he could? I frowned as I trudged up the stairs to my apartment. Our relationship was new enough that I still had lots of things I didn’t know about him. It was another question to add to the mental list.

My overnight bag was weighing me down like a ton of bricks as I trudged up the stairs to my apartment. I opened the door, took a step over the threshold and breathed in deep. I live above a Chinese restaurant and the smell of chow mein and black bean sauce is baked into the walls.

My cat, Lucky, came over to me with a loud purr, demanding a rub. Hi, baby, I said, and focused my energy, sending magic down the lines of my body and into my palms so he could feel my touch. He was a ghost so he liked that kind of thing.

Lucky is a misnomer. Once upon a time, he’d been a cute gray tabby cat. But he’d gotten run over, and as far as I could tell, his remains had to be in the building somewhere (hopefully not in the Chinese restaurant). His tail made a sharp ninety-degree turn in the middle, and he only had one eye. I liked to think he was always winking at me.

And he was the sweetest cat ever. Ghost cat.

I don’t think he knew he was dead even though he would do ghostly things like walk through walls or jump through the window to get to the tree outside. In fact, he always wanted me to put down a bowl of food for him and some water. He would sniff them, every now and again it seemed like he would try to have a nibble, but usually he’d just walk away, his tail mostly in the air.

Some people thought ghosts stayed on earth because they have unfinished business. Can a cat have unfinished business? Like a bird he
