    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Previously, in Bombay Sapphire: Episode 2

Nakushi took in the tableau in one glance. Atasi and Ashok chained to the wall, beaten and unsteady. Ashok bleeding and missing a finger. A nattily-dressed man who had to be Ganesh Bose, standing well away from the mud and the blood. He had the sheer presence of someone in command. And a gigantic man dressed only in blood-red trousers, with blood on his right hand. Ashok’s blood.

And someone in the shadows, in an arterial tunnel that led away from the chamber. Nakushi could just make out the kohl glistening around the eyes.

Her attention riveted on the giant. Glaring at her, he wore a demon’s expression. A rakshasa perhaps—a demon escaped from Krishna while the god was sleeping. Even if she transformed, his powers would more than match her own.

Fear fell like snow on her brain, chilling her mind and freezing her resolution. For a moment it immobilized her. She saw clearly how here, in the underside of the city, she who had been born in and survived the abyss of the slums was destined to confront the greatest test of all. To save the ones she loved, she had no choice but to win. But could she?

Bose turned to face her. If you are Nakushi, he said, then you know what I really want. Where is Bombay Sapphire?

She’s right here, boomed the giant. "She is Bombay Sapphire."

From the shadows in the side tunnel came a shriek. "Kill her! Kill her now! Quickly!"

Nakushi’s heart felt hollow. Her knees trembled as she took a step to that side. Savitra?

    Kill her!

Oh, Savitra, what have you done?

Bose held up a hand and peered into the tunnel. Anoushka? Do you know this woman?

No answer came. The giant began to move toward Nakushi.

Kazeem, wait, said Bose. I must find out—

This is no longer your concern, growled the giant. "This is between me and the asura. I promised you I would destroy her, and I shall do so now."

Reddy slowly raised his head. His voice shook. Nakushi? Run, Nakushi.

The giant swept a great arm at Reddy. The impact knocked his head back against the stone wall, and once more he slumped against his bonds.

    Nakushi glared at Kazeem.

The giant grinned back at her. I see you want to kill me, he boomed. "But you cannot kill me, asura. I cannot die. The gods have decreed it. As long as I have air to breathe, I shall live. His grin turned grim. You however, can die. And when I have destroyed you, I shall destroy those who help you. I shall tear them apart. These two pathetic creatures, he waved his hand at Atasi and Reddy, and that one who lurks in the shadows."

    Wait a minute, said Bose.

Silence, commanded Kazeem. And do not attempt to interfere, Ganesh.

Nakushi’s fear tried to secure her attention, but she slapped it away. Not now! Rage hardened like an unlit fuse. Something deep inside her gave a feral growl, filling her with a terrible resolve.

She lit the fuse. "Ashmita," she said quietly.

Electricity hissed and popped in the chamber as Nakushi transformed into Bombay Sapphire, but her fear of the giant Kazeem remained unaltered. He was an instrument of evil, implacable and undefeatable. Bombay Sapphire recalled Agni’s words to her. He would give her what she needed to accomplish her tasks, except the last one. Was this it, then? Was she doomed to die with her friends in this dank subterranean sewer?

And what of Savitra, lurking in a side tunnel to watch the tableau unfold? What had she done now? Why was she even there? Bombay Sapphire’s heart ached for her.

Kazeem took a couple steps forward, lumbering like a rhinoceros. "It is time for you to die, asura," he rumbled.

Bombay Sapphire backed away while she assessed the giant’s skills. Surely he had chosen this location for their confrontation because it suited him and his combat methods. But if that were true, it meant he wanted to restrict her movements somehow. But why? What could she do elsewhere that she could not do here?

She cast a quick glance around. The chamber was twice as high as Kazeem. About ten paces across and twice that in length. She counted four exit tunnels—two behind Kazeem and herself, a third in which Savitra stood. The fourth gave Ganesh Bose access to the chamber, and presumably led back up to his bungalow.

The giant was immensely powerful, of that Bombay Sapphire had no doubt. But why had he chosen to engage her in such restricted quarters? She continued to back away while she considered this. Her assets were strength, although that surely counted for little here. Perhaps quickness. She might elude his grasp, at least for a while, and prevent him from closing on her. But flying was not an option here.

    Kazeem could not fly!

She took a deep breath, satisfied she had found an answer. But how to apply the knowledge to the battle ahead?

Kazeem continued to plow forward, as inexorable as a tidal wave. The muscles of his upper arms bulged, bigger around than Bombay Sapphire’s waist. As he reached out for her she ducked away, running backwards as she watched for his next maneuver. On the wall, Ashok had managed to lift his head upright. Both he and Atasi were staring at her, their mouths working. But Bombay Sapphire had no ears for what either of them was trying to say. The giant’s foot lashed out, his leg like a teak log swung onto a truck. It only grazed Bombay Sapphire’s hip as she twisted away, but even that slight impact sent her tumbling along the slick stone floor.

Kazeem swerved to one side to prevent her from escaping back through the tunnel she had entered as Nakushi. Now she was cornered against one side wall with Kazeem facing her. He was ready to move to one side or the other to block her. He grinned, his great teeth like monuments.

"You’ve nowhere to go, asura, he boomed. Give up. I’ll crush your skull like a melon, and you can return to Krishna. Maybe in your next life you’ll be a better class of whore."

I serve Agni, she shot back.

    Not very well, it seems.

Without warning, Kazeem turned and made for the pair shackled to the wall. If I cannot taste your death, he grumbled at her, I’ll savor theirs.

    No! Bombay Sapphire screamed.

She flew in a straight line toward Kazeem’s back. She reversed herself at the last moment to jam a heel into the nerve center near his left kidney. Just before impact, the giant whirled. A massive arm swept her against a side wall.

The blow reminded her of a Chinese artillery shell that had once exploded against her and sent her cartwheeling through the air. Her ears rang. Too late she realized that Kazeem was now rushing at her. He meant to squash her against the stones. She dipped to one side but caught a smashing blow to the side of her head from Kazeem’s flailing arm. The impact
