Introduction
What is domestic violence? What is the magnitude of the domestic violence problem? Why do some people want to deny or downplay it? This book can answer these questions and many others.
Among the things you will learn in this book are domestic violence safety planning, how to leave an abusive environment, why some people choose not to leave their abusive partner, and how to stay safe after you leave. You will also read about how to find legal help, find resources, start over, and find your voice.
If you are experiencing domestic violence, you are not alone. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, every 14 hours in the United States a woman is fatally shot by a domestic partner, former partner, or dating partner. Fortunately, there is help available.
Domestic violence is real, it occurs in many households on a daily basis around the world, yet many people deny or are unaware just how serious an issue it is.
I hope that this book can be a resource for you and others who are experiencing domestic violence, as well as for people who are supporting victims, and people who are at risk of becoming a victim.
As a domestic violence advocate myself, I know that you can move forward if you are struggling, surviving, and fighting for yourself. If you feel hopeless, know that there is hope. You can survive, and start over.
