    Chapter One

As far back as Gena could remember her father had always been a rampant drunk. Her mother, Muriel, kept a nervous vigil as she tried to keep her daughter safe from her father's drunken rages. On this particular day, Lou he came home with the fire in his eyes as he burned with anger about something he thought his wife had done.

Muriel! Lou bellowed as he tripped through the front door of their small New York cabin.

Quick! Go, hide, Muriel said to Gena. Eighteen-year-old Gena turned and ran to the cupboard and crawled watching quietly shutting the door behind her. With her small stature, Gena could easily fit into the tiny space and peek between the boards.

Why you woman, you said to me you stayed home but that’s a lie! Lou’s cold dark eyes gazed at his wife with such hatred. Muriel stepped backward tripping over the rug she had placed in their living area and shook her head.

No, Lou, please go sit down. I'll make you some coffee, Muriel said as she tried to back away but Lou lurched forward, too strong and too fast. He had a habit of frequenting the saloon bars and get drunk. In his drunken state, Lou would think his wife worked in one of the saloons as a prostitute. He probably saw some other girl dressed up who looked similar to her.

I promise I've never been to the saloon. Please calm down, please, Muriel begged with the fear of her husband evident on her face. Gena hid in the cupboard not making a sound as she watched in horror as her enraged father stepped forward, convinced he’d seen his wife in the saloon.

No woman of mine will ever cheat on me like that, he roared as he lifted his hand and grabbed Muriel's hair and yanked causing her to lose her balance and stumble into him.

Get off me you stupid unfaithful woman, Lou yelled as he grabbed the bottle of whiskey he brought in over his head and smacked it hard against Muriel's head. Up until that point Muriel fought trying to get away, her eyes quickly darting to the cupboard where her daughter hid watching. When the bottle hit her head, the lights in her eyes went out immediately. Muriel’s body slumped to the floor as she lay dead at his feet. Lou dropped the bottle and let it fall to the ground beside his lifeless wife and then stumbled over her as he made his way back to the bedroom.

Gena felt as if her heart hopped up into her mouth and she would vomit. Fear gripped her and she couldn’t move for she didn't want her father's rage to turn on her. Time and again Gena had watched her father take his drunkenness out on Muriel by shoving her to the floor her and kicking her or hitting her. Gena always hid at her mother’s prompting and her mother had always felt she’d done the right thing by sticking by her husband, no matter what. When Lou would finally pass out Gena would nurse the bruises on her mother’s face and body. Gena would beg her to leave and Muriel told her that she had taken sacred vows for better for worse. Muriel told her daughter she simply had to endure it. Gena wasn't so sure she believed such a thing for she thought God would not like the abuse suffered at the drunken man’s hands.

Gena stayed hidden in the cupboard as long as she could as she gazed at her mother's lifeless body lying on the floor. Blood poured from the gash on her head. When Gena finally opened the door just a bit, it creaked and she froze. She listened for her father and heard his snores coming from the bedroom.

Gena crawled out and over to where her mother lay. Muriel’s neck felt cold and Gena found no pulse. The dead woman’s eyes stayed partially opened and blankly staring at the cupboard, her last
