Chapter 1
The red and gold leaves danced across the highway in front of my Jeep as I followed the meandering line of asphalt through the hills of southern Illinois. Things felt right again. Summer was curled up in a golden ball of fur, napping in the back as we traveled, and Cassie was in the passenger seat looking out the window at the countryside with a smile on her face. I got the feeling things felt right to her, too.
It was our first chance to be together in two years. Her debt was paid now and she was free to go anywhere she pleased. I was glad she chose to be with me.
We still had half an hour's driving before we would be home so I pulled into a little café I knew about so we could have an early lunch. Cassie eyed the roadside building with its peeling paint and wooden porch doubtfully but didn't comment.
It was eleven o'clock on a Friday so the place was starting to fill up with the local farmers and construction workers from the new pipe line we had passed a few miles back. I parked the Jeep in the gravel lot between a muddy 4x4 and a Mercedes SUV that looked out of place surrounded by work vehicles. As we climbed out and went through the squeaky wooden door I noticed the plates on the Mercedes were from Florida. I led the way across the plank flooring to a table away from the main crowd so we could have a little privacy.
One of the reasons I liked this place was the fact that they let me bring Summer in with me. The health department wouldn't like it but what they didn't know...
The pretty, slightly plump, extremely cheerful waitress gave us a smile as she carried a handful of plates out to a table of pipeline workers.
Be there in a minute.
After she had delivered the plates and exchanged a little friendly banter with the guys, she made her way back to us and went straight for Summer. She bent down and gave the Lab a kiss on the head and said, It's good to see you girl! It's been a while.
How are you Grace?
I asked.
Oh, you know,
she responded. Feet hurt and kids are driving me crazy, but I'm hangin in there.
This is Cassie.
Nice to meet you.
You too.
What will you folks have today?
We ordered burgers and drinks and Grace hurried off to the kitchen to put our order in. We sat without talking, just enjoying each others company amid the rumble of the crowd. I watched the interaction of the farmers and the pipeline workers with interest. Two groups of men from two different worlds. They sat in separate groups but when contact was necessary it was respectful. They were all working men and understood each other.
One man didn't fit in with the others though. He sat alone at a corner table and watched the pipeline workers while pretending not to. He wore casual but expensive looking clothes and I immediately connected him with the Mercedes out front.
Grace refilled the coffee the man was sipping at and then brought us our drinks.
Who's the guy in the corner?
I asked as she set the glasses on the table.
I don't know,
she replied. "He's been coming
