    Public Conversations

two girls having a discussion outdoors

Sometimes a small incident can get a lot of attention. It might start with a social media post about a stranger hitting a dog. Other people write angry comments, and they share the story with their circles. Soon it spreads across many communities. Then a news organization picks up the story. It publishes the story and provides more details and comments. In this way, a small story about a dog, a family, or a bicycle accident can go around the world.

These viral social media stories may seem very different, but they often have something in common. The stories make people feel strong emotions. Often there are two sides to the story, and the readers take one side and argue for that side. They feel connected to people who agree with them, but do they change the minds of those who don’t?

    Neighbor’s Nasty Note Goes Viral

Most people think southern California is a great place to live. The weather is good, and movie stars are everywhere. However, not all parts of southern California are the same. The reality is that the nice areas are very expensive, and the affordable areas can be hot, polluted, and ugly. This means families often have to make difficult decisions about where to live.

When Kelly and Mike Bruning were looking for a home in Southern California, they had to make this decision. They loved the beach, but they were not rich. They could buy a bigger house far away from the ocean or a small home near the beach. They knew they wanted a family, so they thought carefully.

In the end, it was an easy choice. They wanted to live near the beach. They loved walking along the water, watching sunsets over the ocean, and swimming on hot summer days. They knew their house was small, but they looked forward to raising their children near the ocean.

The couple bought a small two-bedroom condo close to the Pacific Ocean, and started a family. Their dreams were coming true. Then one day, they received a strange letter from a neighbor. The letter was not signed, but it was angry. The letter said they were bad parents because they were raising their two children in a small apartment without a yard. It said,

    Parent,

It’s important that you know that you guys are about the most selfish parents around. Because you like the beach, your boys are trapped in a tiny, one bedroom upstairs apartment. Kids need a yard to play in. A swing set, or trike to ride when they want to, not just when it’s convenient for you. I don’t know this but I doubt that either of you had to grow up under these
