C.C. Naughton

C.C. Naughton is the author of two fantasy series, The Tales of Twinkle Dingle (humorous fantasy) and the Beneath the Birch Tree saga (fairy tale re-tellings). Her work is greatly inspired by her first literary loves of fairy tales, folklore, and mythology, and her long-time interest in Settlement-era Iceland. When she is not writing or reading, she spends her time herding cats with her life-partner, sewing weird plushies, and trying to figure out how her magic wand works.

    About the Author

    ONCE UPON A TIME

You may remember me, but if we have not yet been introduced, my name is Queen Sparkleberry. To be more precise, my full name is Her Royal Majesty Sparkleberry Nellie Marigold Violet Hyacinth Larinda Cotterill, Queen of the Fairies in the Realm of Twinkle Dingle. I Rule over the Entire Land, and all of the Creatures within; not only Fairies, but many others, including - but not limited to - Dryads, Mermaids, Gnomes, various animals, insects, birds, and even a few Pixies.

Which isn't nearly as exciting as it sounds. The majority of my time is spent explaining to My Subjects why it is Inefficient to Smallify Each and Every Piece of Fruit That Is Harvested; Dissuading the Mermaids from Strewing Their Trinkets and Baubles All Over The Beaches of Twinkle Dingle; and convincing Gran - that is, Rumpleknoll - that she need not PERSONALLY test each and every Weed the Garden Gnomes grow, to be Quite Certain is it Weedy Enough. Once in awhile, Something Interesting Happens, such as when My Useful Fairy found himself Captured by Pixies and Trapped in a Cage (and Even More Horrifying, Compelled to Wear Trousers!), and I have to admit, the daily foot massages were both Pleasant and Relaxing.

Most of the time, Twinkle Dingle functioned smoothly without any input from me, and so there was no need to get involved, much. Gran explained to me once that this was the way a fairy's Magic worked; each fairy had Exactly The Magic they needed to function at their Job - no more and no less - and this caused each fairy to be So Efficient at their Job that no interference was necessary. As well, it gave them Extreme Delight in doing their job, so I never - well, almost never - had to ask more than once. A Royal Fairy gave them that Magic, of course, but there have been no young fairies in Twinkle Dingle for quite some time; everyone here had been given their Magic even before I was born. All I needed to do now was mediate if two fairies couldn't agree whose Job was whose or, once in awhile, deal with a Threat from Outside.

Apparently, though, Royal Magic didn't work exactly the same way as far as Giving Delight, Extreme or Otherwise. I was bored much of the time; even Gran had gone off to live with the Gnomes as soon as she had the chance. And then there was my father. For you see, I was half-Human, on my mother's side. My father, originally a fairy, was changed into a Human and allowed to marry my mother; in exchange, he gave his firstborn - me - to Gran. She raised me as a Human, and it wasn't until I was nearly grown that I discovered my Gran was the Queen of the Fairies, and I was her Heir.

After being Queen for a short time, I began to understand why my father might have left Twinkle Dingle. With Gran on the Throne, and having Nothing Important to do himself, he must have been crawling out of his own skin with boredom. At least I had fond memories of being Human, and could think upon those when I had nothing else to do. It made some sense, now, why he used the Wish he'd been given to become a Human, even with the high price he paid.

As for me, I was really given no choice in the matter. Sure, I agreed to become Queen, and even asked for it, in a way - but it was the only way to stay with Gran, and it wasn't like I had any REAL choice in the matter, was it? I couldn't go back and live with my parents, anyway, because they didn't remember me. Gran had made that happen, somehow. She called it a Kindness to them, so they wouldn't miss me. I had to admit, I did see her point; I had missed her terribly when she and I were apart, and it was only for a few days.

And to be completely honest about it, I didn't want to live with my parents, not really. I didn't even remember them, and, never having known them, I missed the Possibility of them far more than the Reality of them. Gran was the one I wanted to be with; if I had to give up my parents to stay with her, well, I wouldn't do so gladly, exactly, but I would still do it. And so I had, but I had to admit, I was a bit curious about what happened to them after they left.

And so I was Queen - and who wouldn't want to be a Queen? My Subjects adored me, we had a Celebration anytime I wanted one, and it was simple enough to deal with the occasional Real Threat. Things could have been much worse. At least that's what I told myself, although some days I wished that Something Different And Unexpected would happen.

And then Bud found the boy in the woods.

It wasn't unusual for Humans to find their way into Twinkle Dingle. My Magic protected the woods from Most Intruders, but a Human in Real Need could slip through that Protection, as they were Generally Not a Serious Threat. It had happened twice already since I had become Queen, and Gran said to expect it in a semi-regular, somewhat frequent, not-on-any-specific-timetable kind of way.

There was a method to these things - the Human asked me for a Favor, I Required Them To Do Three Absurd Tasks, and if they stayed in Twinkle Dingle long enough to actually finish their tasks, I gave them what they asked for. Usually it was something they could have found in a Much Simpler Way if they had only Thought About It Hard Enough, and the 'Three Absurd Quests' part of the entire scenario was the only thing that
