    Vowel is a sound produced without obstruction to the flow of air from the lungs. Vowels are twenty sounds represented by these phonetic symbols: /i/, /e/, /æ/, /ɒ/, /u/, /ʌ/, /ə/, /i:/, /a:/, /ɔ:/, /u:/, /3:/, /əi/, /ai/, /ɔi/, /əu/, /au/, /iə/, /eə/, and /uə/. 
     
    It is in this lucid manner that this book will teach you vowels. It will help you to learn how to pronounce the words that have vowel sounds only if you can successfully imitate the newscasters of the British Broadcasting Corporation.

    It clearly explains the major types of vowel. They are monophthongs and diphthongs. The monophthongs are pure vowels that are pronounced in a single direction and without a glide. The production of diphthongs begins with a vowel and gradually passes into another vowel. 

    It describes how to produce the monophthongs. The monophthongs are /i/, /e/, /æ/, /ɒ/, /u/, /ʌ/, /ə/, /i:/, /a:/, /ɔ:/, /u:/ and /3:/. 

    With sentence examples, it shows you how to pronounce the words that contain the short vowels and long vowels.

    It describes how to produce the diphthongs. The diphthongs are /əi/, /ai/, /ɔi/, /əu/, /au/, /iə/, /eə/ and /uə/. 

    With sentence examples, it shows you how to pronounce the words that contain the diphthongs əi/, /ai/, and /ɔi/; the diphthongs /əu/ and /au/; and the diphthongs /iə /, /eə /, and /uə.
