Tacticus: Non-commissioned officer rank in the Janissaries. Generally the highest rank available to non-citizens. Equivalent to sergeant.
A soldier´s tale, this is Tacticus White´s story.
Tacticus Laurie White from Charlestown is a Janissary, a slave soldier, and he´s about to go to war.
Laurie is part of an elite recon unit about to infiltrate enemy territory ahead of the coming invasion force, and his mission is to scout and observe. Janissary recon is the eyes and ears of the Brigade, and thousands of lives rest upon the completion of their mission.
As they head for the aircraft, to be inserted deep behind enemy lines, Laurie expects this to be one of the toughest assignments he has ever had. He is right…
Tacticus is a Rift Saga companion novella, and is set at the same time as the concluding events of “Legacy”.

TACTICUS
1.
Laurie gritted his teeth against the pain, as he stared at his enemy, who sat slumped against the cave wall. The enemy was pointing his gun at him, barrel shaking slightly from the effort. Laurie felt his own arm struggle to keep his weapon upright, but tried not to let it show. Sweat trickled down his face, and sometimes his vision blurred. He must have lost a lot of blood.
Wanna make a deal, Moon boy?
his opponent said. Laurie cocked his head. He smacked his lips before answering- he was so thirsty, but if he tried to get a drink the other guy would shoot him in an instant.
I'm not Moon blood, if that's what you mean,
he replied. The opponent guffawed, careful not to let it affect the gun that was still trained on him.
Well then... I guess you're one of those slave soldiers then...
he said, and spat.
Not a slave. I'm a Janissary. English,
Laurie said, a hint of pride betraying his voice. The opponent just laughed again.
Janissary... Shit... you guys...
he began, and grimaced.
So, from what I've learned you may actually become a citizen one day, right? Earn it through your, what do you call it, Service?
Laurie just stared at him. His words were coming out almost slurred.
What difference does it make? We're enemies either way.
But we shouldn't be. Like you said, you're English. You ought to join us, not fight us.
Join what? The Covenant is civilization. Law. Order. You people want to tear it all down. You think I fight for citizenship? Or the Moon people? Hell, I fight for my hometown. My family and friends. My people. Your people would nuke us in an instant if you could...
Laurie felt his cheeks grow hot. Who was this guy to question his loyalty? His morals?
He took a closer look at the man. He was in his early thirties, shaven head, close cropped beard, ice blue eyes. He could have been mistaken for one of the Moon people. His uniform was ragged, and the entry wound looked like just another tear in the fabric. Laurie knew the exit wound in his
