I have always enjoyed reading science fiction and mysteries because I am interested in future science and puzzle solving. I write about stories of the future that mimic today's social issues. Issues such as greed, retribution, prejudice, political corruption, and what the future could become are some of the concepts I use to illustrate a moral result. What motivates me? A story I may read in the newspaper, political idiocy, a situation that happened in history, or just anything that I can twist the perspective around. I travel the west with my husband and read about the small towns of the USA as we drive through them.

    Valentine’s Day

    Jan and Alex

    ––––––––

Last, we had heard from Jan and her husband, Detective Alex Blackhawk, was after his last case in Desert Shock, Secrets Never Stay Hidden.

I have a surprise for you, Alex said.

You didn’t have to buy me anything. All I want is you, Alex, Jan replied, tilting her head and smiling.

Yeah, but I know you’re going to love this. His hand slipped in behind the breast of his jacket. He pulled out a white envelope. I got two tickets to Mars. I have some time—

What? You did? That’s fantastic. When do we leave? she shrieked as she jumped back from the small wooden table. She began yelling and hopping around the crowded kitchenette until Alex closed in on her and encircled his arms around her thin frame.

In a few weeks. I’d like to have some R and R at home with you and friends first.

Yes, of course. Oh, thank you, Alex. Look I left your friend, Frank, down in the car. Do you want to go home or...

    Or?

Jan reached out to take his hand in hers. Alex rose out of his chair and they both strolled toward the bedroom.

Shouldn’t we call Frank? she asked as they entered the small bedroom.

Why? We don’t need him, Alex whispered.

    Valentine’s Day on Mars

Meanwhile, in Alice’s and Mike’s cabin on the Mars Space Station, Mike handed her a small wrapped package

What’s this? Alice asked grasping the item from Mike’s hand.

Open it, he said, as he stood watching her unwrapped the tissue.

She peeled apart the tissue from each side and discovered a molded bracelet with a polished black rock encased by a silver setting. In the box, laid a two inch by three inch white printed card letting her know that the stone was from the surface of Mars.

Oh, it’s beautiful, Alice exclaimed, admiring the design. Who or how?

Just someone I know in Engineering, he replied as he clamped the armlet onto her right wrist.

Happy Valentine;s Day, Alice, Mike said.

And back at you, she said, rising from her chair to wrap her arms around his chest. I’m so glad I came to work on Mars.

So am I, he replied, taking her hand.

In another area of the base station on Mars, Robert walked up to his wife hiding a slender white box behind his back.

And this is for you Jennifer, Robert said holding the present out for her to receive.

You didn’t have to get me anything, she replied, accepting the long box.

Yes, I did. Special flowers for a special lady.

Jennifer opened the long white box and unfolded the
