Basic drawing in pen and ink

A brief history

Recording the happenings in daily life has always been important for humans. Right from the beginning, men used different methods to record what was happening in their lives. Cave man used his sharpened stone to scratch the caves and mark his daily life routine and it all started then and there. Later man developed symbols from pictures to record or save whatever he intended to and from that they developed writing alphabets.

It all developed over a long period of time from scratching and chiseling to writing down on paper. The Chinese invented and developed ink which was later made by other nations too. The romans created the basic form of a fountain pen. Quills were used for a long time period. Then with the passage of time writing, writing styles, and tools all developed. Pen and ink started quite early in the history of mankind.

    Pen and ink

Pen and ink is a very versatile medium. Traditionally black ink with a white paper is used but other inks might be used if your style demands. There are many tools to try when using ink, give each a try and experiment with different tools to know which tool suits you. When starting a pen and ink drawing, you might want to draw a light sketch with a pencil and then do the rest of the work on it instead of starting right on with the ink and pen. Later when the ink is dry, you can erase the pencil. You can scribble, cross hatch, use points, dots and lines to give tones and shades to your work. One can use crow quills, crockle pens, nibs, fine point pens, brushes, and brush pens to achieve the desired effect. If using crockle, nibs, or quills, one needs to clean the tip after a few applications or else the ink dries and the effect is changed. Pressure is also important when using pen and ink. If you press it down more the line will be wider and if you put on less pressure
