Book Abstract
American politics are so closely divided between the Republican and Democratic parties that elections can sway in either direction. Over the last 50 years, this close competition has arisen as a result of changes in the political landscape and the demographic composition of the country in terms of race and religion. Divided America analyzes the nation in terms of its political regions. While the Republicans overwhelmingly dominate the South and the Mountains/Plains and the Democrats are strongest in the Northeast and in the Pacific Coast, neither party can win a national election by carrying its strongholds alone.
