    DESCRIPTION:

The Bulldog has a very wide head and shoulders along with what’s known as a definitive mandibular prognathism – or, in laymen’s terms, a jutting under jaw. Generally, he has very thick skin folds on his brow, and a very short muzzle with thick folds of skin known as ‘rope’ above his nose. He has wide-set eyes that are round and black skin that hangs beneath his neck, sometimes an under-bite (showing no teeth!) and drooping lids and pointy teeth. His coat is very short, sleek and flat. He comes in a variety of colors that include piebald (irregular patches of black and white or any two other colors), brindle, white, fawn and red.

The standard weight for Bulldogs in Britain is forty pounds for a female and fifty pounds for a male. In the United States, a female Bulldog will weigh about forty-five pounds and a male between forty-five and fifty-five pounds. A Bulldog has heavy, wide-set shoulders and a very broad chest with eyes that are set far apart and low. His nose is wide and black, and the ears are ‘rose.’ His skin is soft and loose under his short coat. Characteristic of the breed, a Bulldog’s gait smoothly rolls along.

Your Bulldog’s very broad body is low, with a spaciously deep chest and rounded ribcage. His abdomen is tucked up neatly beneath him. His shoulders, heavy and set well apart, slant outward to give him solid stability. His skull, measuring in front of his ears, should be every bit as great in circumference as his height is at his shoulders. The upper lips should fully cover the lower jaw.

    Bulldog Weight and Size –

Female English Bulldogs are about ten lbs. lighter than males. Females average around forty pounds and their features do not stand out as much. In the show ring, symmetry and proportion mean more than the actual weight or size of the
