The basic premise of the Paleo diet has not changed significantly since it's conception in 1975 when it was referred to as a Stone Age
diet. Based on the concept of - you've got it, the Stone Age or Paleolithic age man, the diet itself focuses on foods that would have been readily available and frequently eaten by our ancestors.
The Paleo diet highlights the fact that the human body is genetically built to most efficiently extract nutrients from specific foods. Being able to extract nutrients with maximum efficiency provides energy and helps to maintain overall health. An additional benefit to eating these types of natural foods is that they lack the preservatives and additives that often cause modern day health concerns.
So just what types of foods were around during the Paleolithic era? Well, according to the latest versions of the Paleolithic diet: fruits, vegetables, lean meats, nuts, seeds, seafood and healthy fats. You will notice a distinct absence of sugars and processed foods as well as grains.
