    Chinese Astrology - Donna Stellhorn

    Celebrating Chinese New Year

The biggest holiday of the year in China is Chinese New Year. Based on the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year falls on a different day each year—most often on the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice. The Winter Solstice is on December 21, so Chinese New Year is about two months later.

Very occasionally, the Chinese New Year will fall on the third New Moon after the Winter Solstice. We will next experience this in the year 2033. In historic China, emperors were in charge of keeping time and telling the people when important dates would happen. Emperors marked these important dates with festivals. Chinese New Year is one such festival.

There’s a legend in China, the tale of a Nian, a fearsome creature with the head of a lion and the body of a bull. Every winter the Nian would grow very hungry and finding nothing to eat, he would come down into the villages to snack on the villagers. But over time, the villagers learned that the Nian was afraid of loud noises, fire, and the color red.

One night, the Nian was spotted coming down from the mountains, so the villagers lit fires, waved red flags, and made lots of noise by banging gongs and setting off firecrackers. Their village was spared, and to this day, New Year’s is celebrated with lots of firecrackers and red banners.

Before New Year there is much to do. The house must be thoroughly cleaned to sweep away any of the remaining bad luck from last year. Lots of special foods are prepared. The night before New Year, it is considered lucky to stay up past midnight—to symbolize enjoying a long life. At midnight the firecrackers start popping.

On the first day of the New Year, everyone wears their best clothes, and everyone says only positive things to one another, to secure good luck for everyone. Red envelopes are filled with money and given to children.

This begins a multi-day holiday. At Chinese New Year there is the dance of the Golden Dragon (sometimes called the Lion Dance). This dragon is decorated with representations of the five elements, lights, silver, and fur. It can take as many as a hundred people to carry the Golden Dragon through the streets. At the end of the route, the dragon is met with firecrackers and cheers from the crowds.

On the second day of the New Year, there is a vegetarian feast, after which people go and visit relatives, bringing them oranges to wish them a prosperous new year. People eat long noodles, the longer the better, as they symbolize a long life. They indulge in Nian Gao—which is a cake made of rice flour, brown sugar, and oil—to bring prosperity.

I have a series of videos on what to do before and on New Year's to bring luck. Here's the link.

Where Are You in the 12-year cycle?

In 2017, Year of the Fire Rooster, we enter the last quarter of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac. However, you may not personally be experiencing last quarter energy in your own life. Your personal 12-year cycle is based on your birth year.

First, let's define the cycle itself. We can compare the 12-year cycle to a single year on a farm in the following manner: three months of the year = three years of the 12-year cycle.

Therefore, the first three years of the Chinese zodiac represent the three months of Spring, bringing the farmer the opportunity to plant seeds. The next three-year segment brings a similar energy as the three months of Summer, where the farmer would be tending the growing plants, weeding the garden, and protecting his fields.

This period is followed by the three-year segment representing the three months of Autumn, and harvest time. This period is marked by great achievements but also hard work. The cycle ends with a three year segment representing the three months of Winter—a time when the farmer finishes up tasks he didn't have time to complete during the other busy months of the year, as he plans for the future. He eats from his storehouse of food and waits for the next Spring planting season to begin.

If you are born in the Year of the Rooster, this year marks the beginning of your personal Springtime, a time which will last for the coming three years. During this period you will want to try lots of new things, meet new people and go to new places. Anything new you do could sprout into real opportunities during this three-year period, and during the three following years.

For Dogs, you are in your last year of Winter. You have been through some busy years, and it's time to think about what needs catching up, what to release or let go, what plans you need to put in place now to make it easier for you to plant new seeds and start new things in 2018.

Pig (also Boar) are in your second year of Winter, and it's time to take stock of what you have accomplished over the past ten years. Where are the investments of your time and energy still paying off? It's a good time to think of beginning to let go of what doesn't work, and of how you can accumulate more with less effort.

Rat natives are in the first year of Winter. Your storehouse and pantry are as full as they will get. To accumulate more, you will have to be energetic and clever in order to identify and gather the final bits of the harvest missed by others. This starts your time of rest and recuperation. You need to take care of yourself and your body.

Ox is in their last year of Autumn, and the harvest is under way. Take everything you have learned so far, and tell the world about your skills and what you have to offer. Demand to be paid what you are worth. This is a time when you can accumulate more.

Tigers, you are in your second year of Autumn, and the harvest is in full swing. Opportunities abound but require you to be out in the world to gather them. Think big and connect with people who can help you.

For Rabbit (or Hare) natives, your Autumn is beginning, and you must adjust to the new workload. That said, now is the period when you can easily gather what you want and need. Don't be shy. You can accumulate much with just a little effort.

Dragons, you are in the final year of your three-year Summer. It's time to focus in on the aspects of your life which are working the way you want them to! Don't put effort into things in your life that are not bringing results. You also want to take steps to gather as many people around you as you can this year, people who will help you with your harvest in the coming three-year period.

Snakes, you are in the middle of your Summer. You see the results of efforts you've made over the past few years. There's still time to make decisions and point your life in a more fruitful direction. It's good to find ways to protect what's yours and to weed out anything less desirable.

Horse natives, you are at the beginning of your Summer. There are sprouts everywhere. Many things you have tried now begin yielding results. This is the year you need to be discerning, and try not to be everything to every person nor should you try to take on every project alone. A good manager knows when to delegate.

For Sheep (or Goat or Ram), you are in your last year of Spring. You have planted many new seeds over the past couple of years. Look at what is sprouting and see if you're happy with it. You still have time to try new things, reinvent yourself and make progress on your goals.

Monkey natives, you are entering your second year of Spring. You are creating new options for yourself, but you may not yet see much in the way of results yet. This is a good time to study and improve your skills. Follow your heart and plant seeds for what you want to do with your life. The sprouts are coming soon.

    Rat Personality

I am a Rat. It's hard to admit. I really wanted to be one of the cute animals. But after exploring so much about the 12 different Chinese Zodiac signs, I have come to love and appreciate being a Rat.

Rats are very hard working, ambitious, and thrifty. The Rat individual is very focused on getting ahead. They want to achieve things in their life, and they want to get to the top first. They have a frugal reputation, but they are generous with those they love. They do love a bargain and are good not only at saving money but making money as well.

In the traditional stories about the animals who make up the Chinese Zodiac, little Rat ran ahead of the other animals to be named the first of the Chinese Zodiac. This drive to move quickly is indicative of people born under this sign, and their desire is to get there first and to be noticed.

Rat natives want positive recognition for their work and to be awarded honors for their achievements. That said, they also just love a challenge—so once the award is won, it's easily tossed aside as Rat focuses on taking the next step up the ladder.

Even though Rat may not be the cutest of the Chinese Zodiac menagerie, they are very well liked. They may start out acting in a reserved manner but become more social when they feel more comfortable in their surroundings (it's perfectly understandable to be cautious when you're a little mouse…). You'll find Rat to be more talkative when topics relating to business and money are involved.

Rat makes a good friend. They may not have a lot of close friends, but those who make it to Rat's inner circle will be looked out for and supported. People born in the year of the Rat will gravitate to other successful people. They have trouble tolerating lazy people, and can't be bothered with anyone who wants a free ride.

It's easy to read a Rat's feelings. When they are upset (and they are easily irritated), they can be critical. They also tend to compare and contrast everything. This helps them identify and locate the best of everything—from bargains to loyal friends. Rats are good at writing and communication. They have excellent memories and are always asking questions.

Rats like to accumulate, although it varies from Rat to Rat what exactly they are accumulating. Some Rats accumulate money, others material things and still others accumulate social or business contacts. Rat is adaptable and has good intuition, so they can quickly determine whether there will be a benefit in any specific situation.

Because Rat is the smallest of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, safety and self-preservation are considered paramount. They can sense danger, but Rat finds it hard to heed the warnings if they simultaneously smell opportunity and potential success. Rat needs only to follow their gut and finish what they start to end up the wealthiest of any of the signs.

    Rat: Predictions for 2017

January: The year starts off right as January 1st falls in the month of Rat and the day of Rat. So for those born in the year of the Rat, you get a triple Rat day (it's really better than it sounds)! This means you need to put your clever mind to work visualizing what you want to accomplish this year. With such an auspicious start, consider thinking big and outside the box. Don't necessarily think in terms of dollars or sums, instead, think about the people and connections leading you to your goals. For business success think of new clients and referrals. For love and romance think of dating opportunities or enhancing your existing relationship.

From January 5 to February 2: This is the Ox month. During this period you'll be focused mostly on finances. You may want to update financial records or get your taxes done early. This is a good month to look at your possessions and declutter where needed. Mercury is still retrograde until January 8th so hold off making large purchases such as cars, boats, homes or computers until later in the month.

You're quite busy during this period, and it's a good idea to schedule in time for rest, personal care and exercise. Balance in your schedule will be the key to a happy Rat this month. You may be surprised to hear that working all the time doesn't make you feel better about your financial security. Take some time to consider, meditate, ruminate and listen to your inner voice. This guidance will steer you in the right direction.

From February 3 to March 4: We move into the Tiger month, and notice how the energy shifts; you find yourself needing to speak up and wanting to be heard. This is a good month to put your words and thoughts into the world. This could be through social media, videos, or just speaking up at the company meeting and expressing yourself. There's positive contact with siblings during this period. Be extra kind to neighbors as an argument started during this time could escalate. That said, if there's a neighbor who is irritating you or damaging the neighborhood in some way, this person should be reported to the association or the authorities.

There are two eclipses during this period. Watch for something in your life to change in regards to work, daily routine and sleep patterns. You may need to change your shift at work or just get up earlier to beat the traffic. You may get an opportunity to work from home. Or you may find yourself in the office for much longer hours. Be open to the changes coming, and you will find many benefits in the adjustments you make.

From March 5 to April 3: It's Rabbit month, and our focus turns to the home. You may be interested in renovating or redecorating your dwelling. You may find yourself scrolling through decorating videos for ideas or wandering through the aisles of the local home improvement store. Ask yourself what changes you could easily make that would make your home more comfortable and better serve your family. You are lucky in the area of real estate during this month. This is a good time to relocate or acquire rental property.

Interest in older relatives is strong during this period as well. It's a good idea to reach out and contact loved ones who live far away or to reconnect with distant relatives. Consider checking in on your genealogy.

From April 4 to May 4: This shifts us into Dragon month. Positive energy and opportunities start to form during this period. Some of this is due to Mercury being retrograde, because opportunities that you thought were dead seem to revive this month. That said, it's much more difficult to get new ideas and projects off the ground. Be patient and focus your energy on finishing things, revising plans and reworking projects. Write down new ideas and save them for later in the year.

This month the focus is on creativity and children. If you have kids, you'll find they need something from you. This could be more than just your attention, they may be asking for money, support or want you to change something in your life to accommodate them. Listen, but then decide what's best for all parties involved.

Your creative juices are flowing. Take some time to indulge in your favorite creative activity. This could be painting, writing, dance or whatever you like.

From May 5 to June 4: Snake month is a more challenging month as you are tempted to spend time working (and possibly worrying) rather than finding a work/life balance. Your health can be compromised if you don't take the time to take care of yourself.

This is a good month to look at new routines and ways of doing things. Avoid being too sedimentary this month, rather turn off the TV and get outside for some fresh air. Also, try getting to bed a little earlier as more rest will do you a world of good. By the end of this period, you'll find the changes you have made benefit you greatly.

From June 5 to July 6: Horse month is the most difficult month of your personal year, as for you as Horse energy is the opposite of your own. A little mouse, no matter how energetic, can get trampled by the distracted horse. This is the month where you need to get help. Focus your efforts on delegating what you don't know how to do or don't want to do. Don't get caught up because of the expense. By not delegating you're slowing your success. Look for positive, helpful partnerships. Do some networking. Form alliances with related professionals or businesses.

This is also a good month to pay attention to your personal relationships. Sometimes Rat natives get caught up in activities and projects and start to take those important people in your life for granted. This is a good month to take a day off and spend it with your honey. Or, find some good friends and plan a dinner party. Make a night of it and play some games. You'll make wonderful memories.

From July 7 to August 6: This is the Sheep month. After the struggles of the last month, this is a good month for adjusting your routines, habits, and plans. You've had an opportunity to see what's not working, so now it's time to alter the course. Even slight changes will bring more success than trying to beat your head against the same old wall.

This is a good month to find which networking efforts are paying off and to leave the rest behind. You have limited time and finite energy and so look for a return on your investment keeping in mind that not all returns are monetary. This is a good month to gather your allies and brainstorm on projects and ideas. Keep an open mind. This is the month where you can make considerable progress if you allow for change.

From August 7 to September 6: This is the Monkey month. In fact, August 7th brings a Lunar eclipse, signaling a change of feelings about a friendship. This, in turn, may ripple through your professional life if you work with this individual.

August 21st is the total Solar eclipse. This suggests a big change related to children or a creative project where you've been involved. If it's a change with one of your kids, you may find them in a situation where they need your help, but that they are unwilling to take your advice. If it's a creative project, you are the one who is not listening to another's sage advice.

This is a month of excitement and opportunity for you. Even though Mercury retrograde can make some of your plans less than smooth, you can accomplish a lot of progress on your goals during this period. Just use caution when sending information out through social media or other media channels. You can catch errors before they go public if you take the time to double check what's going out.

This is a good time to focus on learning some new skill. You may want to take a formal class, or you can just pull up some videos on YouTube. Sharpen your sales skills, your computer skills or even just improve your ability at a hobby. Anything you choose to study can benefit you in some way in the future. This is also a good month to learn by traveling. Take a trip to somewhere new even if it's just to the next town.

From September 7 to October 7: Now we enter the Rooster month, and this is a Rooster year, so we have double Rooster energy. For Rat natives, Rooster energy has positives and negatives. Rats love the speed with which Rooster takes action and their amazing organizational abilities. But Rat and Rooster can also bump heads if both are trying to close the same deal or go for the same job. You'll get frustrated at times during this period as others will focus on organization and preparation rather than action.

This is a good month to put projects and plans out into the world and to listen carefully to the feedback you receive in return. If you only hear an echo of your hopes and wishes be wary, this is not useful feedback and may be voiced by people just trying to gain your approval. On the other hand, if the feedback is mixed and people talk about what they like about your plans and what they don't like you have found worthy counsel; you can take this information and use it to make adjustments to bring you greater success.

From October 8 to November 6: The Dog rules this month and this is good news for Rat natives. This is a harmonious energy giving you a boost as you move towards your goals. This is a good month to look for friends and professional colleagues to offer you a helping hand. Ask, and ye shall receive. Opportunities won't necessarily fall at your feet, but be sure to open the door when you hear the sound of those who are willing to knock.

This is also a good month for long term planning. Look at where you would like to be in your life a year from now, even five years from now. There are seeds you can plant this month to help you have a wonderful harvest in the future. Rat sometimes focuses so much energy on the present that future planning gets left to another day. Well, this is the time to give it some attention. Even some wishful thinking now will bring positive events in the months to come.

November 7 to December 6: Pig (or Boar) month is the beginning of the balsamic period for Rat natives, now you can benefit greatly by spending some time looking at the past 12 months and assessing what has worked in your life and what needs to be adjusted. This is a good month for turning inward. Consider learning/practicing meditation, or at the very least, catch up on your sleep. You are very susceptible to suggestion this month, consider turning off negative media and stick to listening to positive music and happy words.

Things you may have been ignoring or problems that have disappeared temporarily into the background now emerge and demand that you deal with them. You can handle these in your usual fashion, jumping in and getting it
