About this ebook

Ventricular septal defect is the presence of one or more holes in the wall that separates the right and left ventricles of the heart.
Ventricular septal defect is one of the most common congenital heart defects.
The defect may occur by itself or with other congenital diseases.
Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is failure of development of the septum between the two ventricles of the heart.
The ventricles are a single chamber at about 4 weeks' gestation but by 8 weeks it has been divided in two.
Failure of development of any part of the septum results in a defect
Congenital heart defects are problems with the heart's structure that are present at birth.
These defects change the normal flow of blood through the heart.
During pregnancy the right and left ventricles of its heart of the fetus are not separated.
As the fetus grows, a wall forms to separate these two ventricles.
The heart has two sides, separated by an inner wall called the septum.
The septum prevents mixing of blood between the two sides of the heart.
If the wall is not completely formed, a hole remains.
The most common symptoms are:
1. Shortness of breath
2. Fast breathing
Ventricular septal defect is diagnosed by:
1. A heart murmur
2. Echocardiogram
Treatment is by:
Many small defects will close by themselves and is not treated
If the opening is large, open-heart surgery may be needed to close it and prevent serious problems.
Most surgery for VSD repair is done by the first year.
Normally a patch of fabric or pericardium (the normal lining around the outside of the heart) is sewn over the VSD to close it completely.
Anyone who had surgery for a VSD requires a regular check up with a cardiologist who is experienced with adults with congenital heart defects
Medications are rarely needed.
The long-term outlook is good .

    Introduction

    Ode to VSD

Ventricular septal defect is the most common congenital heart disease

There is a hole in the wall dividing the left and right heart ventricles

Membranous VSD are the most common congenital cardiac anomaly.

Three other VSDs exist with outlet, inlet and muscular less commonly

Ventricular septal defect is usually symptomless at birth

Babies with VSD usually have low weight and growth

There is fast heart rate and fast breathing

There is also poor weight gain and poor feeding

There is a pansystolic (murmur along lower left sternal border

There is a palpable thrill due to turbulence of blood flow

Most VSD cases do not need treatment

And heal in the first few years without problem

Surgery may be needed with larger septal defects

The hole can be closed with an occlusive patch

Ventricular septum defect in infants is initially treated medically

With digoxin and diuretics for heart failure temporarily

-An original poem by Kenneth Kee

    Interesting Tips about the VSD

    A Healthy Lifestyle

    1. Take a well Balanced Diet

    2. Treatment of VSD:

If the defect is small, no treatment is usually needed.

However, the baby should be closely monitored by a doctor to make sure that the hole eventually closes properly and signs of heart failure do not happen.

Babies with a large VSD who have symptoms related to heart failure may need medicine to control the symptoms and surgery to close the hole.

Medications may include digoxin and diuretics for heart failure.

If symptoms continue even with medication, surgery to close the defect with a Gore-tex patch is needed.

Some VSDs can be closed with a special device during a cardiac catheterization although this is rarely done.

Having surgery for a VSD with no symptoms is controversial.

    3. Keep bones and body strong

    Bone marrow produces our blood

Eat foods rich in calcium like yogurt, cheese, milk, and dark green vegetables.

Eat foods rich in Vitamin D, like eggs, fatty fish, cereal, and fortified milk.

Eat food rich in Vitamins B and C such as green vegetables and fruits

Zinc and other minerals are important to the body

    4. Get enough rest and Sleep

    Avoid stress and tension

    5. Exercise and stay active.

It is best to do weight-bearing exercise such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, dancing, or lifting weights for 2½ hours a week.

One way to do this is to be active 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week.

Begin slowly especially if a person has not been active.

    6. Do not drink more than 2 alcohol drinks a day for a man or 1 alcohol drink a day for a woman.

Alcohol use also increases the chance of falling and breaking a bone.

Alcohol can affect the neurons and brain cells.

    7. Stop or do not begin smoking.

It also interferes with blood supply and healing.

Cigarettes contain more than forty types of hazardous and possibly cancer causing chemicals which can harm the smokers and those around them
