About this ebook
"Ladies" know how to behave in Society. "Ladies" never put a foot wrong, never say an inappropriate word, and never cause their parents a moment of distress. "Ladies" can overcome any embarrassment with grace and poise.
....and then there’s Gertrude.
Gertrude struggles in the bright light of Society, trying to keep her poise and not embarrass her adoring mother. But when she falls for the most eligible bachelor the Season has to offer, she literally falls.
....on him.
Lord Chatterton survives Lady Gertrude’s onslaught with dignity. While Society mocks her from the sidelines, Chatterton isn’t laughing. He’s falling, too. For Gertrude.

Chapter One
I am pleased to make your acquaintance...
Omph!
Lady Gertrude Shiveley’s backside connected with the drawing room floor. Her pink muslin skirts flew up, revealing a pair of plump legs in pale pink stockings.
Masculine chuckles and feminine giggles followed on the heels of her ignominious downfall. Gertrude winced, but the sting to her bottom was nothing compared to the bruise to her pride.
And just when she thought she couldn’t possibly feel worse, she glanced toward the door. The newest arrivals stared at her. Amongst them was the Duke of Chatterton. His sister, Lady Tilly, stood beside him, her gloved fingers over her lips while her eyes danced with silent laughter. Gertrude wanted to crawl under the sofa and die.
As Lady Gertrude sat on the floor trying to muster the courage to rise and face her guests, Lord Chatterton set aside his hat, gloves, and walking stick, and approached. He silently held out a hand to her.
Gertrude gazed up into the angelic countenance above her. He was so handsome. Her mind focused on his pleasing features rather than his offer of assistance. His eyes were the same grass green as her own, clear and fringed with thick, dark lashes. He was beauty personified, a Greek Adonis, the type of gentleman who gave Lady Gertrude Shiveley wide berth for fear of her legendary clumsiness.
Except….he wasn’t avoiding her, as he reminded her with a little shake of his proffered hand.
Gertrude sucked in a humiliated breath and grasped his hand. Strong, warm fingers enclosed hers, sending a thrilling tingle up her arm. So flustered did she become that she panicked, surging to her feet with unladylike haste.
For the duke, the whole situation bore the earmarks of a tragic comedy. As Lady Gertrude surged up, he tugged. The result sent him staggering back, losing his balance, and landing on his own backside, still holding the lady’s hand. She, naturally, came forward with him, sprawling atop him in a most undignified manner.
Chatterton may have been known in Society as a perfect gentleman, but he had a healthy sense of humor too. He would have laughed aloud at his current position had Lady Gertrude’s free hand not become trapped between their bodies. How she’d managed to get her hand trapped in the worst possible place was a mystery.
A smile stretched across his face, the humor of the situation outweighing the embarrassment. But as she struggled for a breath, she flexed her fingers.
Horror of horrors, the duke felt his body respond to her unintentional caress! Eyes widening, he stared at her and when her startled green eyes finally met his they grew as wide as his. An innocent miss such as Lady Gertrude couldn’t know what was happening to him but clearly she knew it was most improper.
He fought the urge to stammer out an apology, knowing instinctively that calling attention to his deplorable condition would only make her embarrassment worse. They had to make the best of their situation and soon. Worse, his anxiety was
