    Born in Bielefeld, Germany in 1994, Bernhard Schlink is a judge and a law professor. He grew up in a protestant family. His father worked as a theology professor at a nearby university, but was called up during the war.

    Schlink is the author of numerous crime novels, including a trilogy of works which all feature the same protagonist - a detective named Gerhard Selb. The Reader (Der Vorleser in German) was published in 1995, and made waves on the literary scene of the time. Schlink currently lives between Berlin and New York.
