Vikings X - Gunnar Hamundarson And The Flaming Sword - J.J. Robin

    The mission

Gunnar Hamundarson ran through a waterfall of molten lava, holding his large iron shield overhead to protect himself from being seriously burnt. He was now badly wounded. Six of Surtr's towering Muspell guards, fire giants that had natural abilities to control fire, had him surrounded in a very unfavourable situation. Gunnar's crushing responsibility of preventing a war in the nine realms hung on the success of this critical mission entrusted to him by Odin, the leader of Asgard.

Three days ago, a top mission was assigned to Gunnar by Odin in a closed door meeting.

There is an extremely unreasonable task which needs to be done, which is why I am bringing it forth to you as a request, not an order. You can choose not to do it even if there is just the slightest waver in your heart. Odin told Gunnar, who by now understood this meeting was anything but simple. Our intelligence has intercepted grave news that Surtr, along with several of our enemies, is plotting an attack on Asgard. I need a very skillful person to infiltrate into Muspell to prevent this plan from progressing any further. This is a highly dangerous mission, this person may not be able to return safely.

I am who I am today because of your grace. Tell me the task that you need me to do. Gunnar replied without a hint of hesitation.

Very well, my brave warrior. Odin paused in thoughts. Your mission is to go to Muspell to get rid of the symbol of power - the Flaming Sword of Surtr, came Odin's short instruction. Gunnar would have to single handedly face a whole legion of fire giants to accomplish his mission.

Back in Muspell, Surtr, the leader of fire giants emerged unharmed from the same curtain of molten lava separating two areas and roared violently in anger, causing his charred brown rock structured body to expand and leak out molten lava and gas with each temperamental spike. How dare you steal my Flaming Sword! The blasphemy to even lay your unworthy hands on my precious sacred sword! The deafening voice of Surtr reverberated off every volcanic walls in his fortress, which was entirely carved out in an active volcano.

Numerous hulking giants spat out molten fireballs at Gunnar from various different directions, skillfully aimed at his blind spots. Flames from these molten fireballs would only extinguish after the objects they set ablaze were completely burnt. To be surrounded by these bizarre and dangerous monsters was probably one of the worst situations Gunnar encountered in this mission to steal the Flaming Sword in order to thwart an allegiance of dark forces plotting against good.

The colossal eight foot tall fire giants closed in rapidly on Gunnar. Gunnar fought back by splitting his saber into two, wielding them skillfully with both hands and cutting down the fire giants.

Gunnar strategically cleared a path for himself towards the portal he sneaked into Muspell, and dashed into it with the Flaming Sword in his possession. Before the fire giants could give chase into the portal, which he knew would be the case, he released a powerful and massive energy ball which blasted the portal's opening, effectively sealing the only link from Muspell to the other worlds. Surtr was left exasperated as the portal door closed and vanished in front of his very own eyes.

But the destruction of any inter-dimensional portal was not without risks. Gunnar was well aware there were great risks associated with his actions when he blew away the portal opening to prevent the fire giants from following, but the exact risk was unknown. Nobody had ever been caught in an unstable portal, needless to say, nobody could anticipate what would happen.

In Gunnar's case, this brash act practically rewrote his life. The damaged portal resulted in a severe deviation to the original exit. He was brought to a different world, the world where he was born and lived before he was chosen by Odin to be a god.

    New home, old home

It was a bright, cold and snowy afternoon on earth. On the snow covered slopes of Mt Shasta, a lone white wolf was foraging for food in the snow. Weather had not been kind for the past several days, and as a result there was an exceptionally thicker blanket of snow than usual.

The weather changed as fast as a candlelight was blown out. Thick rippled grey clouds formed and gathered, covering the entire sky in the area. The day became as dark as night. The beautiful white wolf looked up to the sky at the sudden change and barked, as if in protest of the loss of sunlight, before running off. Wind speed picked up and a blizzard formed. Visibility plummeted in an instant to twenty percent at best.

The damaged portal exit changed its course to earth and appeared as a dark opening at an extremely high altitude in the skies of earth. Gunnar dropped out of the hole and fell through earth's skies. The falling momentum catapulted him into a remote area of the snowy mountain like a crashing meteor rock. The impact caused a grand powdery splatter of snow and created a mild tremor which shook trees and momentarily disrupted the peace to the mountain wildlife.

Even for an immortal, a raw collision of this severe magnitude was enough to cause serious damage to the body. In the case of Gunnar, he slipped out of consciousness and was buried by thick layers of snow. More snow continued to pile on him over the years, keeping him frozen and his time still.

    Future and present

Seven hundred years later in modern day Mt Shasta, a great avalanche shook the mountains. Enormous amounts of snow came sliding down, ice was broken up, and trees were forced out of their rooted grounds.

A large chunk of ice with the frozen body of Gunnar enclosed within sailed down the mountains. As if destined, the block of ice with Gunnar frozen in it rolled and crashed through a hot springs bath house. It stopped after it splashed into a hot spring. Droplets of water from the splatter fell onto the back of an old man and startled him. He was the only person in the hot spring at that time. He did not hear the crash as he was hard of hearing, and did not see as he happened to have his back turned at that time.

The heat from the natural warm spring waters began to quickly melt away the aged ice covering Gunnar. In just a very short time, all that remained was Gunnar in a frozen and stiffed state. Gradually, warmth was permeating through each and every cell in Gunnar, giving him a much needed defrosting. His tight body began to soften, life returned and he slowly stretched to re-align his freed body.

As soon as Gunnar regained consciousness, he realised water was flooding his lungs instead of precious oxygen, and he quickly swam up to the surface to gasp for air. He rested his massive torso by the side of the hot spring pool, exhausted and feeling lost.

Gunnar's eyes remained closed for quite a few seconds while he recollected his senses. He had no recollection of anything. He could not remember who he was or how he had arrived here. He had lost all of his memories. But he was too wounded and drained to be too bothered by these details for now.

Gunnar walked away from the hot springs bath house wet, and he shivered violently from the freezing cold air. The smiling friendly old man using the hot spring yelled after Gunnar, Are you an actor? That is pretty cool ancient looking costume you are wearing there. Oh hey big guy, you will freeze to death if you walked out there in this climate. The old man's words fell on deaf ears as he watched this drenched strange man in Viking warrior attire staggered off and disappeared in the dark outdoor.

Gunnar wrapped his huge arms tightly around himself as he braved the bone shattering piercing cold weather. Every step he took required him to exert much efforts lifting his frozen legs from the snowy ground. There was no destination in his mind. After wandering in the snow for about two hours, he stumbled onto a lone fenced up wooden cottage in the woods. The fences looked more like for the purpose of marking territory than of keeping unwanted wildlife or humans away. He pushed open the door but passed out almost immediately at its doorway. Perhaps it was the comfortable sight of the cottage owners that made Gunnar relaxed all his guard, and succumbed to his exhaustion and injuries.

The door was swung opened, thanks in part to strong wind. Howling wind filled the room and large amount of snow flew in from the opened door. The startled owners of the cottage laid down their utensils as they were disrupted from their dinner. They cautiously approached this hulky stranger, who by now had icicles formed on his well combed hair and beard. Upon realising that he was badly injured, they brought him indoors and provided care for him.

John, the cottage owner, was an experienced physician. He was puzzled by the extent and cause of Gunnar's injuries. Nevertheless, both John and
