    THE FAMILY

Toying with the lazy Susan on her kitchen table, Serena sat across from Ross wondering why she was on the verge of giving in. She'd never introduced her father to anyone she was dating. Most guys hadn't cared. Ross did. Touching the carousel made her want to introduce Ross to her Mother. It was the craziest thing but she could swear as she spun the lazy Susan around she could hear her mother scolding her to stop playing with the one that had sat on their kitchen table for years. Her mother would scold and her father would come to her, kiss the top of her head and have a spin. Then the two of them would laugh so hard that pretty soon everyone had to have a spin before her mother would reach for the nearest towel and start whacking all of them, her father included. It was one of those memories that brought her comfort.

As she played with the carousel she realized how the thing helped her to hang on to the happy childhood memories. It was probably the reason her mother had had bought it for her, one of the many housewarming gifts she’d given her when she’d purchased her home. With a sigh she acknowledged how important her parents and her siblings were to her, so were her friends, especially Jules. Why was she so hung up on not getting to know those whom Ross was close to? She should want that connection. More importantly, she should feel glad that he wanted it also.

She allowed her thoughts to drift a bit longer. What the heck was happening with her and Ross? Falling in love, came the softly whispered voice of her subconscious. The thought was at once exhilarating and terrifying. Ross wanted so much from her while she wanted only him. Would it even be possible to have a relationship where you never saw or talked to your family or friends? She smiled knowing she wouldn’t want to ever exclude those she loved from her life. But she didn’t know if she was ready to give Ross Carte Blanche into every aspect of her life, even if he wanted to do that with his.

A new chapter in their relationship, which was what he’d called it. She should have known he meant it literally. Since she’d agreed more than a week ago to the completion of the meeting of families and friends he was changing, becoming more…how should she put it? More pushy. Yes, that was it. At the moment he was steering the conversation toward when she would meet the rest of his friends. Of course he was right. They had waited much too long for her to show her gratitude to his friends for all the trouble they'd gone to for their first date. They must think her rude at this juncture. Then of course there was the matter of the rest of Ross's family and hers. He wasn't letting up on the subject. In truth, he was wearing her out. She was out of excuses. She stared at him wondering how their story would play out. At last she gave a weary sigh. Are you done?

You’re being so quiet. Things are never good when you’re doing that.

She brought her gaze up to meet his. Ross had aroused her curiosity. Why would you think that?

Because of the subject and your silence. You’re inevitability trying to find ways to not be a part of my life, to not meet my family, to not meet my friends. You’re not sure if you want to be included in those areas of my life.

What the heck. Was Ross now a mind reader? She reached for his hand and gave him a tentative smile. Stop trying to second guess me.

I will if you stop trying to make excuses to keep us from moving forward.

I wasn’t aware that was what I was doing?

    'Right."

    I'm serious.

Rolling his eyes, Ross laughed. That’s the one thing about you that drives me insane. I know that you’re serious. Yet, you couldn’t be more…well you couldn’t be doing more to keep us at a standstill if you were trying. I’m flabbergasted by your maneuvers. What are you afraid of? You’ve already met several of my friends. You’ve said a dozen times that you wanted to get together with the rest of them. She was giving him her tuning out look. That wouldn’t do. He was serious and he needed her to tune in. He’d been more than patient.

"Serena, it’s been months. It’s getting a bit ridicules that I have to keep making excuses about why we can’t, or won’t join my friends
