    INTRODUCTION

This book is being written for two reasons. The first, and most important, is that on July 10th, 2016, while in prayer with God, He gave His servant the go-ahead to write this book, and even gave the title. Now, to be frank, I was really surprised when He did this, as I was not expecting it. About two months ago, my dear sister Therese, to whom this book is dedicated, asked me to write a book on prayer. I said to her at the time that there likely was not enough material on prayer in God’s word, the Bible, to write such a book. She has not been a believer for very long and she felt a need in this area of her life, which is not an unusual request, and is even Biblical, since we see one of The Lord Jesus Christ’s own disciples make such a request to Him one day, as we read at Luke 11:1, It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples."

Now the second reason for writing this book, and would likely also be why God has led His servant to write it, is because a few weeks ago, I was listening to a sermon on the internet, from a very conservative site relating to the faith, where this minister stated that if one ever heard another believer say that God told Him or that God spoke to him, then one was to run away from that person as fast as one could. Well, I had a quick and ready answer for that so-called minister. I shut him off promptly! What came to mind at the time, and what made me react as I did was because I was thinking of prayer. How can one have prayer without expecting God to speak to us through His Son by His Holy Spirit in our human spirit as we come to Him and unburden ourselves as His children yet on earth? Prayer was never meant by God to be just a one-way conversation!

A little later on in this Introduction, one will read that I have written over 535 Devotional Commentaries on portions of God’s word since January 14th, 1980, which is when God saved me, and also preached 52 sermons over a period of four years, from 1996 to 1999, and the reality is that all the material for this work was given by God while His servant was in prayer with Him. In other words, God spoke to His servant through His Son by His Holy Spirit in my spirit, giving me the illumination that I needed relating to certain passages of God’s word, or relating to the message for the sermon that was being prepared. After all, I was not free to write what I wanted to write in those Devotional Commentaries, or what I wanted to speak in those sermons. Those who heard God’s servant then needed to hear from God, not a mere man, or what was the point of giving a sermon! Our purpose for gathering as believers on a Lord’s Day is to meet with God!

Similarly with the writing of these books, the background material has been from more than 100 studies of God’s word done over the years. Readers, especially when reading Christian books, have a right to expect to hear the truth expounded, which can only come from God. No matter how intelligent or how educated one might be, when it comes to putting forth the truth of God in a sermon or in a book, then one better be of one heart, mind, and purpose with God, or else one is wasting one’s time and everyone else’s as well. Therefore, rest assured dear readers that God does speak to us and one of his prime ways of doing so is when we are in prayer with Him! This is one truth, among others, that will be shown to be true in this book, and should also be true in a believer’s experience.

What should also be mentioned, as we bring this Introduction to a close, is that after
