About this ebook

Jusleen, a happy-go-lucky “everybody’s friend,” meets her match in the aloof and reticent Michael. An excursion to the popular hiking trail at Mission Peak becomes the pretext for discussing the controversial Pan-Asian question: Does Taiwanese cultural identity assume a Chinese label in America?

Told from both characters’ points of view, The Mission Peak Adventurer presents the legacy of Taiwanese culture in America, and the second generation’s choice to either wear or discard its accessories. Set in the globalized microcosm of California’s East Bay, Jusleen and Michael have opposing views of their shared culture. When their personal views collide, a budding friendship is tested in the light of their differences.

Different generations and people of different ethnic origins have different views on China. But they all agree on one thing. That is democracy.¹

    Preface:

The Mission Peak Adventurer is a work of literary fiction. While China-Taiwan political relations appear to be an astringent issue in this story, these references are not meant to be a criticism of any government, but simply a reflection of the main character’s point of view. At the time of this story’s publication, the United States did not ‘recognize Taiwan as a sovereign country.’² Therefore, mentions of supporting Taiwan’s democracy is predicated on the fact that the People’s Republic of China, a Communist country, claims Taiwan as a part of its sovereign territory and seeks eventual unification. Mentions of Yelp as a convenient website for finding local businesses are also limited to the context of this story.

The LED dashboard clock had just turned 4:30 when Samantha announced in her automated Australian accent, Captain, you have reached your destination.

Thanks, Samantha. I couldn’t have done it without you.

    What is your next command?

Samantha, text Michael Huang, ‘Jusleen is here.’

    Texting complete.

The light from inside Michael’s apartment extinguished, and I heard his clomping footfalls getting louder as he neared. I reached over the passenger seat and unlocked the door. Michael got into the car wearing an oxford blazer and a greyish silk scarf.

    Is it cold outside?

    Uh-huh, he replied.

Looks like there’s no moon tonight, huh?

    Nope.

    Hey, Michael?

    What?

Happy new year. Did you go to any parties last night?

He shook his head and yawned.
