Author

James R. Thomas

Author James R. Thomas takes young readers into the world of space travel, teaches them the importance of conservation, and tackles the topic of helping children cope when a parent is deployed in the military. Many of his stories were inspired by his military service and the challenges his own family faced with his deployments. The author also brings his love of science fiction to life and teaches children to be socially conscious about our planet. In his books, James addresses a variety of life issues for young readers. His goal is to help children build an awareness of the world around them and to empower them to reach for the stars. Through his character, Joe Devlin, children can explore space travel of the future in the intergalactic world of the Space Academy series. This series was inspired by the author’s deployment to Afghanistan, during which he had promised to write a story for his son, whom the character, Joe Devlin, was based upon. James’s conservation series teaches children the importance of keeping our planet healthy and safe while showing them that every single person, including the reader, can make an impact on the planet, good or bad. In addition, James has published two stand-alone books. One covers the importance of telling the truth and the other teaches children about allergies. To round out his versatility as an author, James tapped into his own life experiences and crafted a series to help younger children cope with the deployment of a loved one. James also has expanded internationally, with his books now published in French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. To round out his versatility as an author, James tapped into his own life experiences as a United States Naval Commander, Naval Pilot, and prior Marine and crafted a series to help younger children cope with the deployment of a loved one. James is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, with a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering, and he holds an advanced degree in business administration. He is married with a son and a daughter and resides in Chesapeake, Virginia. When he is not writing, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing guitar, and flying.

    DETENTION

    ––––––––

Cadet Joe Devlin was walking The Line for the last time. Dean Carter stated that Joe had served more hours in detention than any other cadet in the history of the Space Academy. Without a doubt, confinement had become part of Joe's life . . . or so it seemed. Trying to make light of the situation, Joe occasionally joked that it was a mandatory academy course, and that he was leading his peers in meeting the class requirements. However, he had made a promise to his father and he intended to keep it.

Commander Nelson stood on the walkway flanked by white detention lines as he watched Joe and M.K. Angel march back and forth. The rest of the cadets had finished their punishments weeks earlier.

Joe stopped and turned in position, then resumed his marching toward the far end of the line near Nelson. Hours of detention made Joe numb to each step, with his feet instinctively striking the line.

As he approached the Commander, Nelson spoke in a controlled-mocking voice. Cadet Devlin, it seems you are my favorite cadet, since we spend so much time together. I have even considered naming this line after you. You know, not many people get their own detention line.

Joe turned and looked at Nelson, Commander, I don’t think you’ll ever see me here again. I’ve changed . . . I made a promise to my dad.

Cadet, that’s great to hear since you’re officially done with your detention. Have a good trip to the space station and please . . . Commander Nelson’s facial expression changed into a warm welcoming grin, in the future, try not to save anyone else from certain death without the permission of the Intergalactic Space Force.

Joe was stunned that Nelson knew about the operation. It was highly classified, with only Dean Carter aware of the real reason for his detention. Nevertheless, Joe’s thoughts quickly shifted back to himself, since he and Angel were finally liberated.

Joe, we leave in three days for the Space Station, Destiny, said Angel.

Our academy class has already been on the station for two weeks, but the Dean said that it would be easy to catch up, replied Joe.

The Dean had condensed Joe and Angel’s detention time, allowing them to work off several periods each day to catch up with their classmates training on the space station. The instruction allowed them to gain vital fleet experience before starting their third year at the Academy. The rationale was to let cadets interact with fleet personnel who were operationally supporting the Intergalactic Space Force, the ISF.

"The Dean definitely likes you. No Cadet has made it this far on all the rules you have broken. You have the highest demerits in the history of the Academy," added Angel.

    You’re right . . . except, I’m cleaning up my act.

Angel walked with Joe on the pathway as they headed back to the dorms. The campus was void of all cadets, giving them a strange feeling of loneliness, since it was usually hectic with students hurrying to class. Their unofficial trip to the Tourian Void to rescue Joe’s sister had caused Angel to endure the same punishment as Joe. Until this infraction, Angel had a perfect school record. Now, he would never be able to graduate at the top of his class, like his father.

It's too bad that James' career was ruined because of us, while you and I were given a second chance. Or a third in your case, said Angel with an uneasy smile on his face.

After the rescue, Joe had overheard Angel’s father telling him how disappointed he was for disregarding Academy rules. Later, Angel seemed distant—lost in his thoughts for several weeks, only speaking a few words when absolutely needed.

Angel did not mind the penalty, since it was his choice to go on the mission. However, he felt that he let his father down, and needed the time to think to himself. Besides, James Anthony had lost more—his identity as a Star Fighter. James was a true friend who had put everything on the line for Joe and Angel on their unauthorized operation, and Angel respected James’ courage.

I'm not sure what James is doing as a civilian, but he will be at my family’s get-together as Emilie's guest, said Joe.

Joe felt guilty for Angel’s suffering, but he knew only time would make his best friend feel better. While Joe waited for Angel to recover, he tried to focus on his own family. His sister, newly promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, LTJG, was coming home soon from her deployment to the Tourian Void. Joe and Emilie had a strong sibling bond, so he was keeping their recent talk a secret, at her request. She wanted time to announce the life changing news in person.

Did I hear you right? Did you say James would be there?

    Yes.

And your dad is cool with that?

He doesn’t know James is coming.

The reunion was the first time in a year that the entire family would be together. The long period of separation was not unusual for a military family. Joe's mother, June, was a very strong person; nevertheless, she always missed her family. But soon all thoughts of separation would be forgotten as they reunited.

That will be interesting. Can I attend? I like fireworks! replied Angel.

    "Yes,
