    PREFACE

My heart’s desire is for every person who reads this book to see how easy it is to misjudge others without knowing their whole story. Oftentimes, if you would take the time to just listen, you will learn a lot about them.

Think on this for a moment: If you knew someone was being bullied, would you help them in any way you can or would you turn your back and pretend that you are blind to the horrible act? What if the person being bullied was someone you attended church with – and you chose to not stand up for him or her? How could you face that person? If you made the choice to stand up for the victim and were asked (during the confrontation) Whose side are you on?, I pray you would respond boldly: On God’s side!

Sometimes, God puts us to a test – just to see if our claim of loving Him coincides with our claim of being a child of His. God is love. When we say we love God and do not do right by Him, we hurt His heart.

By the time you are finished reading this book, I would like you to compare your life with the characters and begin a dialog of love and peace with others. We need to be true friends to one another…friends who others can open up to and trust – whether that be in the church, schools, and/or on the job.

I love you as Christ loves the Church.

~ Anna Mae Red Rose Johnson

    DEDICATIONS

In loving memory of my mother, Ms. Helen Fields. Mom made sure I knew who God was. She made sure I had a way to church and Sunday school – even if it was on the back of a truck. I thank her for making sure I had a job during the summer, for teaching me how to have self-respect, and how to continue to love others when they talked about me. Thank you, mom, for always being there for your family, ensuring I did not hang out with the wrong people, and that I wasn’t in the streets all times of the night. You have always made sure we had a place to lay our heads at night. Most of all, thank you for the hammer and bat you kept at your bedside to protect us. I am truly thankful that God gave me you as my mom. I appreciate your support while I was in school and for those times when you came to my job to make sure I was paid. For those special trips you made to come be with my husband, George, and me to help with your grandsons, I thank you, mom. We love you and miss you very much.

In loving memory of my Aunt Sally who was just like a mother to me. I love you very much, auntie. You always made the best potato salad and banana pudding. You always encouraged me and told me how proud you were of me. Thank you, Lord, for the time we spent together on the phone before God called you home to be with Him.

In loving memory of my best friend, Mrs. Loretta Moore, who always told me, Don’t let nobody steal your joy! I remember the day I was working in my yard cleaning out the flowerbed. When I turned around, there you were - getting out of your
