Fairy Pox - Emily Martha Sorensen

    Chapter One

Bianca swallowed as Cassie pulled out the necklace.

Are you sure you want to take it back? Cassie asked anxiously.  I mean — nobody thinks you have to . . .

It’s mine, Bianca said sourly.  Don’t try to talk me out of it.

Cassie’s hand wavered in the air, and the locket slid through her fingers.  It dangled through the air on the silver chain.  Maybe it won’t be all bad.  Maybe there’s something good about the sense of itch, she said slowly.

Ha! Bianca said.  But she didn’t pull her hand away.

    "Are you sure?" Cassie asked.

Bianca snatched the necklace away from her.  As soon as her fingers touched it, a burning feeling spread up her arm.  She dropped the necklace, and it thudded to the carpet.

I should have mentioned that there’s a fairy sitting on your arm, Cassie said.  He’s a little boy with really big feet.  He followed us here.  I think he might be Maricela’s friend.

Gritting her teeth, Bianca leaned over and grabbed the necklace again.  Her arm burned and began to itch like crazy, but she held tight and didn’t scratch it.

He’s stomping on your arm, Cassie said.  Like the way he stomps on Maricela’s forehead.  Hey, do you speak Morse Code?

You don’t speak it, you tap it, Bianca muttered, squeezing the necklace.  Her arm was driving her crazy.  She was desperate to scratch it.  And no, I don’t.

Maybe you should learn it, like Maricela is, Cassie said.  Maybe you could talk to them.

Bianca yanked her arm away, and felt relief.  Then an itchy spot drummed up the back of her hand.  She moaned softly.

He seems to be trying to tell you something, Cassie said.  Maybe we should ask Amanda to talk to him?

No, Bianca snapped.  I don’t need any help.  I’ll figure this out myself.

Cassie stared at her nervously.  Are you sure you’re okay?

Bianca unclipped the necklace clasp and fastened it around her neck.  The familiar cold weight of the locket settled down the front of her shirt.  She’d worn it for months before she’d figured out that it had caused her itching, and thrown it away.

Now it was back, and so was her fairy sense.

She hoped it was worth it.

I’m fine, Bianca said, though her hand was driving her crazy.  She smacked it around the air and moved off to the side.  The itch thumped over to her elbow.

He’s on your elbow now, Cassie said.

"I know! Bianca cried.  Do you think I don’t know?  I have a fairy sense, too!  Just because I can’t see them or hear them or anything interesting doesn’t mean I don’t know they’re there!"

Cassie shut her mouth.  Her lower lip trembled.

Bianca clenched her fists, furious with herself.  This was how she’d lost her old friends, by yelling at them.  Viola and Georgina now hung out with Sunflower, and Jasmine was now friends with Janelly and Ashley.

She was lucky Cassie had decided to be friends with her.  She didn’t have friends to waste.

I’m sorry, Bianca said, though that was something she hated saying.  I didn’t mean to yell at you.  I just don’t need help.  Okay?

Okay, Cassie said in a small voice.  I didn’t mean to bug you.

Bianca’s wrist was driving her crazy.  She dug her fingernails in and started scratching.

My mom says when you scratch an itch, that just makes it worse, Cassie said.  Or you hurt yourself.

    I know! Bianca shouted.

Cassie drew back, her eyes huge behind her glasses.  She looked like she was about to cry.

Bianca squeezed her hands into fists.  She hated itching.  It had ruined her last friendships, and now it was going to ruin this
