    WHEN GRAY Fox began his journey, a clear blue sky had arched high over the waters of the Lake of Mists and a soft breeze gently lapped the shore. Now, with only half his trip behind him, he broad-bladed an oar and slowed the canoe. His belly tightened as he watched a bank of white fog drift across the western shoreline and spill onto the water. He should have waited for the morning sun before setting out on his visit to his childhood companion.

    He and Elk Horn had been born on the same day in the birthing tipi eighteen snows past. Inseparable from the time they became knowing human beings, they struggled to keep from weeping the day Elk’s widowed father found favor with a woman of the Yellow Earth band and took his son to live among her people. That had been two long summers ago. So when scouts reported the Yellow Earth had settled for the summer on the lake’s southern shore, Gray Fox impulsively decided to visit.
