Chapter One
Nicholas Matthews, owner and president of the Matthews Corporation, stared at his right-hand man in utter disbelief.
Have you gone mad?
Nick demanded when he found his voice. John Smithson just smiled at his employer and friend.
You know that Victor Sakiyurai is from a very traditional family. I told him that you have a family to polish your image a little bit.
John explained.
But I do not have a family.
Nick reminded his associate. John just shrugged that fact away like it was unimportant.
We will find you a family.
He replied with certainty.
Where?
Nick looked around his office, searching for the unseen family.
There are plenty of single women in this building.
John chuckled at Nick's shocked expression at his suggestion.
You want me to 'hire' one of the women who work for this company?
Nick asked, looking at his friend like he had gone mad.
Sakiyurai-sama is coming for a month for the negotiations for the merger and not many women can just take a month off of work to help you. This way, you can control the woman's time off and can keep it from getting out to the press that your marriage is a fake.
Do you have anyone in mind for the role of my wife?
Nick asked reluctantly.
I have a couple of women in mind. Should I call them up here?
John replied.
I guess so. I will have my secretary clear my schedule for the next couple of hours.
Nick sighed.
A half hour later, three women were sitting in the waiting area outside Nick's office. The first woman was a young mail room clerk named Kelly Jackson. Beside her was a brown haired woman named Sheri George. The final woman was blonde haired, blue eyed woman, Abby Nogushi, who was John's secretary. None of them knew why they had been called to the president's office.
Kelly was the first to be called into Nick's office. Nick was seated behind his desk and John was sitting in one of the two chairs in front of the desk.
Ms. Jackson, please take a seat.
Nick said politely. Kelly was a redhead college student, looked around nervously.
Am I in some sort of trouble?
Kelly asked quietly as she down in the chair next to John's.
No, not at all. We have a business deal of sorts that we need someone to play a role in. Before we tell you more about it, we want to ask you a few questions to see if you are the type of person we are looking for.
John explained.
All right.
Her face relaxed somewhat.
How old are you?
Nick asked.
Nineteen, sir.
Nick's eyes widen at her answer. He glared at John for a moment.
Ms. Jackson, I am sorry to have wasted your time. We were looking for someone a little older. You may go back to work.
Thank you, sir.
Kelly rose and almost ran out of the office.
John, go out there and ask the two remaining women how old they are and if they have any children.
Nick said pointedly. There is no point in wasting my time and theirs if they don't meet those minimum requirements.
John rose to his feet and walked out the still open door.
Ladies, if you could please answer the following two questions.
He said as he approached the seated women. How old are you and do you have any children?
I am 22 and I don't like children, so why would I have any of my own?
Sheri answered hotly.
I am 28 and as you know, I have a set of twin girls.
Abby told her boss, slightly confused on why he was asking for information that he already knew about her.
Ms. George, you may go back to work. Abby, please come with me.
Abby rose and walked past the shocked Sheri. She had been hoping to get close to her sexy employer and maybe 'work' her way to a nice promotion and pay raise.
John closed the door behind Abby and himself. Nick was surprised that John had suggested his own secretary.
Good afternoon, Ms. Nogushi.
Mr. Matthews.
Abby smiled politely as she sat down. She didn't know Nick Matthews all that well, even though she spent a great deal of time in his presence because of her role as John’s secretary. All she really knew about him was that he was a workaholic.
John, I am surprised at your final choice.
Nick commented as John claimed his chair again.
Final choice for what?
Abby asked. I don't mean to be rude, Mr. Matthews, but I have a lot of work to finish up before I leave for the day. Would mind telling me what this is all about?
Well, Abby, as you know, we have been talking to Victor Sakiyurai from Japan about a possible merger. When I went over to Japan to meet with him last week, I kind of told him that Nick here was married with a family.
It took all the strength Abby could muster not to laugh aloud at that statement. So now what he needs is someone to play the role of his wife, someone who already has children of her own, like you.
John finished. Abby's mouth dropped open as she realized what they wanted her to do.
Are you serious?!
Abby exclaimed. You want me and my daughters to pretend we are your family?
Yes.
Nick replied. Mr. Sakiyurai is coming to town Friday evening. He will be staying at my house for the next month until the contract has been signed and the major details worked out. I will need you and your children to stay until then.
What about my job? Surely, if I am playing your wife, I wouldn't be working as Mr. Smithson's secretary. And what about your reputation as a workaholic? If I were truly your wife, I would want you to be around to watch your children grow up.
You will be replaced for the time being. John can hire a temp for your position. And if any of the rumors of my working nature come up, we will deal with them then.
Nick explained. Even though this is John's mess, this business deal will be very good for the company, so I do really need your help, Ms. Nogushi. I assure you that you will be well rewarded for your service and will have your job to come back to with a bigger salary. Will you please help me?
Abby didn't answer Nick's question right away. She thought about her two eight year old daughters, Maranda and Aurora. Could she really put them through this?
Mr. Matthews, I am sorry, but I cannot give you my answer until tomorrow morning. This is something I need to explain and discuss with my children before I can commit to your request.
Abby finally replied.
I understand completely.
Abby was a bit surprised by Nick's understanding. If I had children of my own, I would not want to put them into a situation without their knowledge and approval.
Thank you for being so understanding.
Abby rose to her feet. I will see you gentlemen in the morning. I must finish my work and go pick up my daughters from the baby-sitter. Excuse me.
Ms. Nogushi, please come here first thing in the morning. If your answer is yes, we will have many things to discuss.
Abby nodded her agreement and hurried out of the office.
So what do you think?
John asked after Abby left the room.
I think it will difficult to keep up this to charade up.
Nick said seriously. Victor Sakiyurai is going to see right through all of this.
Oh, Nick, you worry too much!
John smiled wildly to hide his own worry. This merger would bring their company millions of dollars more in profit each year. Well, if she does accept the position, you, Abby, and her daughters will have about three days to become comfortable with each other.
Have you ever met her daughters?
Nick asked cautiously.
No. Abby is very protective of her children. Ever since her ex left her while she was pregnant, she has not trusted any man around Maranda and Aurora, as far as I know.
So why would she even consider doing something like this?
Nick questioned.
Abby supports those girls completely on her own, with no help from anyone.
John told his friend sadly. I am sure that there are many things she could use the extra money for.
Do you have any idea what was the deal with her ex?
All I know is what I have heard around the office. Her ex left after Abby told him she was expecting. He wanted her to get an abortion, but she refused. I think he is some sort of singer or something equally ridiculous.
John shrugged.
I hope she can at least pretend to trust and love me.
Nick sighed, shaking his head. What have you gotten me into?
Chapter Two
Abby walked into her downtown apartment with two small children following her. Maranda, the older red haired, green eyed twin, threw down her backpack and headed straight for the kitchen.
Maranda, I am going to be ordering pizza in a little while for dinner. Please don’t pig out on sweets.
Abby called after her daughter.
But Mama, I am hungry now!
Came the high pitched whine from the kitchen. Aurora, Abby’s younger daughter, just rolled her eyes as she sat down on the couch to finish her homework. Unlike her sister, she had purplish black hair and her
