About this ebook

I was 33 years old when my wife suddenly passed away, and I learned that till death do us part is not the same thing as happily ever after. This is a collection of the things I wrote while I was learning how to work with ever after. If you've ever lost anyone, been betrayed by anyone, or been surprised to learn that forever is a much shorter time than you were expecting, some of these things might make sense to you, too.

    Dedication:

To the five girls who raised me – Kayla, Sage, Ava, Mia, Zoe, thank you for helping me to grow up.

    Acknowledgments:

The woman to whom I am blissfully bound by marital bliss, Kimberly, had to endure a lot of distraction, a lot of confusion, and a lot of desperation while I was trying to write the poems that you're holding. She never (at least, rarely) lost patience with me, and she never stopped urging me to follow my voice, even when neither of us knew what I was trying to say. She is my tireless fountain of strength, and remains my role model and snugglebunny.

This book is a direct result of meeting Jerre Fine, one of the most fearless men I've ever known. He introduced me to Lauren Zuniga, through whom I found Kai Coggin and Andrea Gibson and a whole world of poets denouncing the heteronormative hegemony, and he's spent decades demonstrating that if you know you are something, the entire world should never be enough to prevent you from being that something as perfectly, powerfully, and courageously as you can. Without you, Jerre, there is no book. I respect and admire you as much as anyone I've ever known, and I'm grateful for your teaching.
