Ding......Ding......Ding, I heard someone lightly tap my shop’s counter bell three times. Then, someone with a deep voice said, Hellooo! Polly, you back there?

I set down the hot strawberry rhubarb pie I had just taken out of the oven, onto the cooling rack. The tangy aroma filled my pie shop this morning with a pleasant, fruit-filled aroma. Who needs air fresheners when you have delightful scents from nature’s fruit. OHHH! I tingled from head to toes with delight. The tartness of the rhubarb intensified the flavor of the sweet juicy strawberries as I savored a bite of the delicious pie. I counted another pound added to my hips, though.

When it gets close to the season (around March or so) stores in the nearby area get a fresh shipment of strawberries and rhubarb from the South. I am so thankful that they recently built a Neighborhood Wal-Mart on the outskirts of our small town because I used to have to drive 20 minutes to the nearest store for groceries, including baked good products. As you all know, Polly Ann’s Pies has only been open a couple of months now. I wanted to make a different pie this week, one that I have never made before. A must-try pie, and being that the strawberries and rhubarb are in season, the strawberry rhubarb pie won my vote. Rhubarb loves to be paired with strawberries. They are like BFF’s. Just like my best friend, Cindy, and I. I remember the good ol’ days, when Cindy and I were young, we used to play and swim at our local lake. My mother would pack us a little treat of rhubarb and a container of sugar. We would dip our sticks of rhubarb in the sugar and chew on the rhubarb. The stems of rhubarb are tart and when dipped in sugar, an explosion of flavor would take place in your mouth, almost like the taste of any Jolly Rancher candy.

My shop opened at 6 am but I usually don’t get any customers until the 7 am rush. I looked at my watch and sighed; it was only a little after 6. This is my quiet time when I prepared the crusts and get the pies ready for the day. Who could it be? I wondered.  Comin’, I hollered.

As I pushed open the door, I caught a glimpse of a dark-haired man with a touch of gray throughout his beard and around his temples setting down his bag filled with newspapers and other miscellaneous paperwork at a table. Well, hi there, Mr. Harwick! You’re out and about early today.

Hi, there Polly. I saw tears well up in his eyes, You know the Mrs. is—

What do I say? He really seems upset. I guess you would after spending 45 years or more with someone. Mr. Harwick, I’m so sorry for your loss. The phrase just rolled off my tongue.

Thank you, Polly, Mr. Harwick said as he wiped his eyes.

Wait there a sec. I made a little somethin’ for you over the weekend. I hustled back to my kitchen area and grabbed the sample tray from the refrigerator. I prepared a sample tray just for Mr. Harwick. It had all sorts of fruit pie and crème pie samples, and I added a sample of my fresh-out-of-the-oven strawberry rhubarb pie.

As I handed it to him, he was in awe of the plateful of goodies. Oh, Polly, this is so sweet of you. I will savor each and every bite of it. How much do I owe you?

Oh, don’t be silly, I laughed, Nothin’ Mr. Harwick. It’s on the house.

    Why thank you, Polly!

Would ya like a cup of coffee, Mr. Harwick?

Hmmm. Mr. Harwick hemmed and hawed, Yes. Well, no. Nancy didn’t like me drinking too much coffee.

I stared into Mr. Harwick’s blue-gray eyes. What would you like?

    "Polly,
