About this ebook

I am an addict. I understand how pernicious addiction is, how it slowly and furtively worms its way into the depths of your psyche, how it suffocates your very being.

Once you become addicted, you are an addict for life. Even if you are no longer using, every step of the way will be a struggle. A struggle to stay on the straight and narrow, a struggle against self-destruction.

It does not matter if you are addicted to alcohol, smoking, sex, drugs, video games, porn, the internet, or even your work.

If you are an addict, or care deeply about one, read this book.

Through a systematic approach that blends systems theory with psychology and cognitive science, you will:

1.Understand: How your external systems create and perpetuate your addiction
2.Understand: The real, deep-seated causes behind your addiction
3.Recover: Treat the external and internal causes of your addiction
4.Empower: Change the way you think, and improve your self-image
5.Control: Sustain your recovery

Being un-addicted is not about not being an addict.

Being un-addicted is about control.

Control your addiction. Control your life.

Author

John Rake

John believes in perspective; that the more ways one can view life in, the more wondrous and expansive it becomes. He has worn many professional hats, including entrepreneur, financier, accountant, and now author. Accordingly, his views on issues big and small, personal and global, combine both conventional and unconventional ways of thinking - an eclectic approach which has allowed him to find creative and effective solutions. As an author, he upholds two principles. First, that anything worth saying can, and should, be said briefly. Second, that anyone can achieve anything that they set their minds to. They just need to be shown how.

    INTRODUCTION

This book was written not just for addicts, but also for people who care for, or about, addicts. It is the result of a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding and tackling addiction in all its forms, not to mention the culmination of a very long personal battle with addiction.

Furthermore, it was written not to deal with the symptoms of your addiction (how to manage your life to avoid abusing), but the much more ambitious goal of treating its cause; for only then can you truly control your addiction, and live outside the fear that its shadow casts over you.

We will achieve this in a logical and systematic manner, by first understanding the problem of addiction, then using a systems thinking perspective to identify the causes, both internal and external, before finally proceeding to find solutions to the internal causes through a combination of psychological and cognitive techniques.

The external causes that you identify will be diverse, and in some cases almost impossible for an individual to change, hence dealing with specific external causes will be impossible in this book. However, simple solutions will still be presented to general problems.

The methods in this book can, and have, worked extremely well. However, should you feel the need, or want to use this book in conjunction with other programs, techniques, or support mechanisms, please do so. It is your recovery, do what you deem to be best for your unique situation. Often, the best solutions, like this book, are the result of a multi-disciplinary approach encompassing a myriad of perspectives.

However, try to avoid cherry picking the methods in this book, for the simple reason that nothing exists in isolation, and the methods outlined in this book are synergistic and thus work best when employed together. Add whatever support you feel you need on top of this, but do your best to employ this book in its entirety.

All you need to succeed is a desire to be better, an open mind when reading and learning the concepts and methods in this book, some of which may be entirely new to you, and a healthy dose of personal honesty.

A NOTE TO YOU, DEAR READER

I am neither a doctor nor a psychologist. I don’t have a degree in psychology. But I am an addict. I have spent fifteen years of my life addicted to various substances, destructive behaviors and poisonous mind sets. I understand how pernicious it can be, slowly and furtively worming its way into the deepest depths of your psyche, forcing you ever deeper into its vicious cycle, suffocating your being with you none the wiser.

Once you become addicted to anything; a substance, form of behavior, even a certain mind set, you are an addict for life. You may or may not be using at this moment, you may never use again till the day you pass from this earth, but every step of the way will be a struggle. A struggle to stay on the straight and narrow,
