About this ebook

Former soldier Octavio “Tavio” Reyes works as a barista, a favorite with the customers—especially Tommy O’Shaughnessy. An avowed geek, Tommy comes in daily to flirt, usually under the guise of Trekkie talk. Tavio hesitates; now that he's out of the army, he’s not sure how out he should be, or whether to take his chances on a geek devoted to sci-fi and comic books. But when Tommy compares him to an unemotional Vulcan, Tavio finally considers dating an out-and-proud nerd. Then Tommy surprises him again and introduces him to his daughter, whom Tommy loves even more than Star Trek or Tavio. Now Tavio has a whole new decision to make: Is he ready to romance a family man?

Interesting, sweet, surprising in the sense that it was different from what the blurb made me expect, and heartwarming are ways I would try to describe the story. What makes it stand out from others of this length is the depth of character understanding I got, especially about Tavio. And then, of course, there is the "geek factor", and Tommy is a good one!

Tavio is the poster case of the "strong silent" type. He is an ex-soldier who now works as a barista and occasionally a bartender, but he clearly has trouble adapting back to civilian life. The signs were subtle, but insomnia, headaches, and difficulty dealing with groups of people all point at a mild form of PTSD. He seems to cope fairly well, and his focus is on trying to understand Tommy and his own feelings for the stranger, but the issues are clear. It made my heart go out to him.

Tommy is the exact opposite in many ways: talkative, a total geek, and, as it turns out, a father. He understands Tavio and his very expressive silences extremely well, and that made me hope the two would actually find a way to get along beyond their morning meetings in the coffee shop.

The romance between Tavio and Tommy is very understated, slow, and yet burns with intensity. I loved this almost "minimalistic" style of describing how they got to know each other and how they decided to move on. Very well done!

If you like slow burning romances, if you enjoy reading about the strong silent men and the geeks they fall in love with, and if you're looking for a read that will tell you the bare minimum you need to know, yet manages to sweep you up in its intensity, then you will probably like this short story.
