About this ebook

A Foothills Pride Story

Barista Jimmy Patterson thinks it's a good idea to get rip-roaring drunk on his birthday after he’s dumped by his boyfriend. When the burly owner of Stonewall’s Bar rescues Jimmy, the night starts to look up.

Now Jimmy just wants to know the bartender's first name since he's worn a different name tag every time Jimmy's seen him. "Guy" Stone gives Jimmy seven guesses, one for each night he takes Jimmy out on a date.

While Jimmy’s trying to come up with his name, he's distracted by the destruction of his coffee shop and what looks more and more like a hate crime.

So, for me, this was an example of insta-love, where you don’t really mind that its instant, because it works and it’s sweet.

The 1st person bugged me for a while, because it took so long to learn who “I” was, as the main character. Jimmy also had a theme of slipping into present tense and talking to the reader, which is a pet hate of mine.

For these reasons and for the insta-love aspect, I couldn’t give it a 5 star, but it’s definitely a solid 4, if not a possible 4.3-4.5. I really missed the “getting to know each other” aspect of the romance, as they never tried to talk about their personal lives to an extent that would suggest a real connection. It was all hinted at or happened off page, even before the story began. I also didn’t understand the big deal that was made out of Guy using the word “boyfriend” around Bobby, when he’d already used it around Jimmy, without either of them blinking an eye.

However, I had no problem with the no-sex or explicit stuff, though I’d definitely not class it as a YA story. It’s a solid low heat, but high sizzle, thanks to the incredible chemistry between the MCs and the fun, flirty conversations. Jimmy was particularly fun as a drunk.

Another big problem that made me mark it down was the seriously confusing timeline. Because everything was past tense (minus the present tense slip ups) it was impossible to keep track of where they were, during high transport scenes – e.g. they were on the bike together at the start of a chapter, then suddenly lying in bed together, then suddenly back on the back. These moments, I imagine, were supposed to be flashback style mentions of conversations they’d already had being recounted for our sake. However the way it was written made it very hard to follow and I often had to read paragraphs or pages twice.

Overall, it was a cute, sweet story about romance/love creeping up on you when you least expect it or when you’re not paying attention. I would have liked a little more exploration – of both the characters in general and the relationship. Jimmy and Guy were great MCs and I look forward to reading more. Can’t wait to read Adam’s story.

“Locally owned and operated. Like me. I’d been locally owned and operated by Alex the Shit, until tonight.”

“Why you old bear,” he said happily to Guy. “Look what you lured into your lair. Look at him. He must be half your age, you dog.”

“I don’t want you to think I take you lightly. I don’t want you to think I think this is all a joke to me. It’s not.”
