Guardian of a Princess
By Cheryl Carpinello
––––––––
The two horses—one small, one massive—munched on tufts of green within reach of their bridled heads, resting while their riders scoured the nearby bushes. The morning had been spent in wild rides across meadows with the last of the summer wildflowers—blues, yellows, and reds—flashing by as they raced. Armed with their bows and arrows, the riders had also practiced shooting from the backs of the horses and on the ground. Although a fun competition, they always argued over who’d shot the best. The girl’s laughter rang out, causing the black horse to raise its head as if to see if she was okay.
She tossed her braided brown hair. Cedwyn,
Guinevere said, I still outshot you.
She held up her six arrows in a victory grip. With her free hand she tousled his sandy hair, earning her a good-natured scowl. Friends forever, the four years separating them made little difference.
Cedwyn wrinkled his forehead as he gazed up at her. If I could have found my last arrow, that would have proven I shot farther than you.
Yes, it would have. But you couldn’t, so I win.
For now.
His scowl widened into a grin that ended in dimples that refused to go away even though he neared eleven years of age.
Like their riders, the horses couldn’t have been more different. The slender sorrel stood at only fifteen hands, just tall enough to avoid the label of pony, a label it would have reacted to with a snort and a baring of teeth. Patches of white hair over its shoulders and rump spoke of years in a harness, and its muscled legs told of a life pulling the war wagon loaded with supplies from camp to camp. The decision had been made after the king’s last campaign that the sorrel had done its duty. Now, in a life so different from battle, it faithfully served the princess’ companion Cedwyn.
The bigger horse stood over seventeen hands high. Its black coat was almost grey with the ash and sweat mixed on it. Huge legs with thick white stockings stomped the padded ground more out of habit than a need to keep the flies away. The black coarse tail twitched from one side to another for the same reason. Occasionally it tossed its head to keep the forelock out of its eyes, causing the black and white mane to rustle in the air. Unlike the sorrel beside it, this was a retired battle mount whose job now was to carry a princess and keep her out of harm’s way.
However, it had not always been so. Once this had been the mount of a mighty king. And while some believe that animals have no long memories, Seren Brenin—King’s Star—remembered what had happened to take it out of battle for good.

Arrows flew past the massive warhorse’s head. Sometimes even over its back causing its withers to ripple just like when flies in the blustery heat of summer attempted to land there
