1. Introduction
This book came to be after several years of trying to figure out what self-esteem was and how it worked. I shall admit from the start that I’ve never seen myself as having particularly low self-esteem in general, but there were times that I doubted myself and I felt this was an area that I could still improve in.
I had big dreams, and I would set goals, but I consistently struggled with achieving those goals. Part of thought it had to do with not believing in myself enough, not thinking highly enough of myself, or simply put: not having enough self-esteem.
So over the years I read multiple books (and watched videos as well as live presentations) on self-esteem and related topics, such as confidence, mindfulness, and similar. Sometimes there was something I could take to heart, something that I felt helped me, and sometimes the message didn’t really jive with me, or fully make sense to me. Some things, for example certain exercises, felt really great at the time, but in the long-term I couldn’t see any actual changes in how I viewed, and felt about, myself.
Other things immediately struck me as counter-productive if the goal of the exercise was to improve my self-esteem.
After trying different methods for quite some time, it occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, I should take a look at what the actual research on the topic of self-esteem has to say.
