      Chapter One

      As Mia Thompson stared at the cresting, falling waves of the Atlantic Ocean, she tried to imagine what life at sea would be like. Yes, she was enjoying the first day of her trans-Atlantic cruise a great deal. But an eight-day cruise from New York to Le Rochelle, France isn’t the same thing as living onboard a ship for a living. The waves gently undulated under the summer sun and she began to fantasize about the excitement of meeting a new man.

      It’s finally over, she mused to herself, amazed that for the first time in a long time she wasn’t delving deeply into an ever prevalent sadness. Maybe it was the cruise she was treating herself to that was helping her mood. Her ex-husband, Eric, was falling literally more and more miles behind her with every passing minute. The idea of putting an entire ocean between her and her thoughtless, cruel ex, lifted her spirits. It didn’t hurt that a brisk breeze and the smell of countless fathoms of salt water all about her gave Mia the feeling she was on a grand adventure.

      Is everything to your liking, miss? One of the younger Bahamian crewmates in his stiff, white uniform approached and placed a hand on the rail. She guessed there were around ten years between them if he were 25. Not that she’d ever own up to her own age. She intended to be 29 for as long as she could get away with it, and just now she felt as though 28 was closer to about right. Distracted, she touched one of her ears and flicked away short blonde hair. Mia was normally a brunette but had decided to dye it just for the trip. With great change comes great possibilities, her friend Steph had suggested as they cut and dyed her coif in her kitchen. It had come out perfect, or so she hoped.
