Dedicated to survivors of a broken heart.
An alligator in a nearby pond stares at me with hungry eyes. In the Amazon we had black caimans, but here on Roanoke Island it’s gators. This one is starving. I can literally feel the gnawing emptiness in its gut.
Since I was a small child, I’ve been able to feel what nearby animals are feeling. Not their thoughts, just feelings. Sometimes it works on people too, but mostly just animals. My mother, an American doctor running indigenous outreach clinics across the Amazon, warned me to stay in the villages, but I constantly strayed into the jungle to connect with the animals.
I spent my childhood growing up there, then Mom moved us back to Greenville, North Carolina, where she’s an academic celebrity. She taught classes at her alma mater, Brody Medical School, while I attended middle school and high school. Then when I enrolled at East Carolina University, Mom returned to South America and her life’s work.
I miss her. We email every few days and talk about once a week, but it’s not the same as having her here. Tears fill my eyes as I think of her. Tears come easily to me because I’m much more emotional than most people. It’s the price I pay for being half-Fae. My mother is human and my father is Amazonian Fae. I’ve never met Dad. Mom doesn’t like to talk about him. She named me Isabelle, Izzy for short, and I use her last name, Babineau. I never knew my father’s name. It’s probably something unpronounceable.
Because of my Fae blood, my emotions are connected directly to my body. When I’m sad, I get sick. When I’m happy, I get more powerful. A wise woman outside of Iquitos once told me that I should never fall in love because a broken heart could kill me. I should have listened to her.
