Video Poker for Little Old Ladies - Pat Gaudette

    Introduction

I haven’t always been a gambler, at least not a casino gambler. Everyday life is a gamble. Every time we choose to do this instead of that, we are gambling that we’ve made the best choice. Casino gambling is a different animal altogether.

My casino gambling began in 1995 when my boyfriend and I flew to Las Vegas to meet friends who were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Our final destination was Kauai, Hawaii where they would renew their vows on the beach at sunset.

We were staying at the MGM Grand and didn’t realize it was so crowded due to the Tyson- McNeeley heavyweight fight scheduled during our stay. None of us are boxing fans so we were clueless as to the event and the number of people who would be crowding into the casino.

The morning of August 19th my boyfriend and I decided that now was the time to do it and made plans to get married later in the day. After considering various options, we scheduled a limo service to pick us up at 9 p.m. in front of the MGM Grand for a trip to the courthouse for the marriage license and then to the famous Little White Chapel for the marriage ceremony. What we didn’t expect was the number of limos crowded outside the casino and the mad rush of people from inside the casino. The infamous fight lasted only 89 seconds and thousands of disappointed boxing fans were rushing to leave the casino.

Our limo driver told us he’d be easy to spot: I’ll be the one with the red bowtie. And, there he was, standing outside a maroon Cadillac, in a sea of black and white stretch limos, waving at us. He was pleasant, personable, and more than de- lighted to be a part of our wedding plans.

Getting the marriage license was easy and when we got to the Little White Chapel there was no waiting line. The four of us went inside the chapel after paying for a simple ceremony and that was the first time I wished I’d dressed up instead of wearing jeans and a casual blouse. The officiant looked and sounded like Jean-Paul Belmondo and the ceremony was beautifully done.

The next morning we flew to Hawaii and I picked out a wedding band, gold with a cutout plumeria design, at a local jewelry store. Our friends’ wedding renewal, on the beach at sunset, was the perfect beginning to our marriage.

I spent more time wandering through casinos than actually putting money into machines during that 1995 trip. I couldn’t see much sense in sitting at a machine feeding it coins for hours on end. I did thoroughly enjoy the spectacle of the mega casinos and the glimpse of old Las Vegas during a trip downtown.

Our annual trips to Las Vegas and periodic trips to Biloxi turned me from contemplative observer to hardcore gambler. Video poker machines were mixed in with or next to regular slot machines and the first time I fed my money into a quarter video poker machine and hit the DEAL button, I was hooked.

    Las Vegas, Nevada

My husband and I have returned each year to Las Vegas to celebrate our anniversary. For the first few years we weren’t too savvy about comps for our casino play so we paid for our hotel room, food, and travel.

The first year we returned to the MGM Grand because it was a hotel and casino we knew. Then I attended a meeting at Luxor, with accommodations paid for by the Internet company I was freelancing for, and we began staying at the Luxor. While I was in meetings, my husband gambled his way through Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, and Luxor playing video poker. Back in our room that night, he pulled wads of one hundred dollar bills out of his pockets.

Apparently his success caught the attention of the casino because we were contacted by a woman who said she was our casino host and if we ever needed anything when we were in Las Vegas to give her a call.

This was the break we needed because we could call our host when we were planning a visit and request a lower room rate, a ride from the airport, some comped meals during our stay.

For several more years we stayed at the Luxor, preferring the older pyramid rooms with their slanting ceilings and inclinators (elevators that go on an angle up the side of the pyramid). We had a super casino host and it wasn’t long before she became more than a host, she was a good friend. In 2005, MGM Mirage acquired Mandalay Re- sort Group’s casinos which included the Luxor. New management replaced many senior employees including our casino host. We no longer had a Las Vegas connection.

As our anniversary drew closer, we weren’t sure where we were going to stay. Without a host we didn’t know what, if any, accommodations we could get at the Luxor.

Then we got a phone call from our former host who had been hired by Caesars Entertainment. She said if we were interested in staying at Paris or one of their other casino hotels to let her know. Her timing was perfect. We told her we needed a room for our upcoming anniversary and we’d love to stay at Paris if she could arrange it. Not only could she arrange a room for us then, she has been our personal contact for every anniversary and every trip to Las Vegas since.

We enjoy spending a few days each year in Las Vegas but it’s not a town we’d like to live in full time. There’s more to do than gamble but being gamblers, that’s what we do when we visit. In the future we may play tourist and visit the Grand Canyon or Lake Mead or Hoover Dam.

At night, Las Vegas is truly an adult playground and the Sin City title is well earned. Along with talented singing groups playing in casino bars, nearly naked young women gyrate on platforms by poker tables. Women in short tight dresses, balancing on dangerously high heels, make their way along the sidewalks. Rolling billboards advertise sexual services to your room.

Opulent shows, decadent restaurants, outrageously extravagant shopping is all part of the allure of Las Vegas. And, with Las Vegas being so close to California, there’s always the chance of spotting a celebrity on the street or in a casino.

Las Vegas, regardless of the negatives, remains our gambling city of choice. There’s nothing else that compares with the glitz and opulence of the mega casinos or the outrageousness on display virtually any night (or day) of the week.

I’m glad Las Vegas is far enough away that we can’t go every weekend or even every month. The thrill remains each time we visit and I think it might diminish if we visited too often.
