Who Were the Ancient Greeks?
The ancient Greek civilization lasted from around 2000 BCE to 30 BCE. During this time, there were a few different groups that ruled. Each ruled over slightly different territories. The ancient Greeks were not ruled over by one leader, but they all shared a way of life, beliefs, and traditions.
The ancient Greek civilization had a large impact on how the modern world developed. Historians know a lot about it and are still learning more.
Historians have learned a lot about ancient Greek culture from some of the amazing stone buildings that they built, such as the Acropolis in Athens.
How was Greek civilization affected by geography?
The mainland of ancient Greece was hilly and mountainous. It had a long, rugged coastline. There were also over 1,400 islands in the Aegean Sea that were part of ancient Greece. The mountainous land with large amounts of coastline had a big effect on the way the Greeks lived. It affected where they could live, how they could travel, what they could farm, and their openness to attack. They had to make use of the natural resources that the land provided, they had to grow enough food to survive, and they had to find enough water to drink and water their crops.
This satellite image shows the Aegean Sea and the land surrounding it. This is where the ancient Greek civilization was.
