    Chapter 1

It was Joshua’s tenth birthday, he woke early to beat his sister downstairs to breakfast, washing and dressing as quickly as possible he rushed down the stairs two at a time.

Skidding round the hallway and into the kitchen, happy birthday Josh, was the chorus that met his ears, mum Katy, dad Tom and sister Charlize were all sitting round the table, eggs, bacon, fried bread and baked beans were already on the plates, his very favourite breakfast, this is going to be just the best birthday, he said as he landed in his chair.

After a lavish dollop of ketchup landed on his plate, he tucked in, he was hungry, the usual cup of tea followed, were his family really taking this long to finish, Josh needed to get to the lounge to open his cards and presents.

He looked at the clock, it was seven in the morning, how did Charlize beat him downstairs, he thought, she never gets up before seven thirty, this really needs looking into.

Joshua liked investigating strange things and unusual happenings, Charlize getting up early was definitely an unusual happening, he was rolling the problem round in his mind when his father said, you may leave the table now.

He was out of the chair like a rocket, only just remembering to push the chair under the table before dashing into the lounge, Joshua wasn’t expecting much in the way of presents, he knew that times were hard, the factory closed one month ago and his dad lost his job with two hundred other employees.

They never went hungry because the garden was always full of vegetables and the ten chickens supplied them with all the eggs they needed, but he had heard his parents talking, money was a problem and they may need to move to a cheaper house.

Three wrapped parcels waited for him on the sofa, the first from dad, he ripped the wrapping off in one go, Wow he said as the shiny leather tool belt fell into his lap, it was embossed all the way round with stars, a pouch was sewn on one side, lots of metal rings were fitted at intervals around it.

The second parcel was from mum, this one was tied with ribbon so he had to untie it before he could rip the paper off, Wow was all he could say as the leather pouch fell out, it had two metal loops to fit on the belt, inside it had two screwdrivers, a hammer and a Swiss army knife, Oh thank you both so much, he said.

The third parcel was from Charlize, she was thirteen and had a weird sense of humour and a wicked knack for practical jokes, usually at his expense, this parcel he opened very carefully anticipating something, shall we say, unusual, as the paper slowly parted, he saw a black torch, an alarm button that played the sounds of sirens and machine guns and a pair of pliers.

Thank you so much sis, this completes my belt, what a wonderful birthday this will be, he said smiling brightly as he fitted everything onto his belt, wrapping it round his waist and fastening the metal clasp with an eagles head moulded on the front, it fitted perfectly.

The next ten minutes were spent opening and reading his cards, one was missing, every year he had a card from Aunt Gladys, it always had a five pound note in it, and it was always here early, this year it was missing. Joshua carefully stood the cards on top of the piano, then stood back and admired them, the smallest one end and the largest at the other.

The morning just kept getting better as his dad pulled out his box of special chocolate covered Brazil nuts, Josh took one and popped it in his mouth, oh this was good, then a glass of mum’s homemade ginger beer landed in his hand, scrumptious.

Joshua heard the postman whistling as he pushed the post through the letterbox, his dad got up and wandered through to the front door to collect the post, it was several minutes before he returned, two more cards Josh, he said as he passed the two blue envelopes to him.

Then he went into the kitchen with the rest of the post, his mum Katy followed and closed the door, something’s wrong, whispered Charlize, they both sat quietly trying to listen, they heard a gasp, then the sound of mum crying softly, they knew better than to open the door to find out what was wrong, they would be told soon enough.

It seemed like hours but was probably only thirty minutes until the door opened, Katy came in still wiping tears from her eyes and sat on the sofa between Joshua and Charlize, putting her arms around them she said, we have some bad news, Aunt Gladys has passed away, we have a letter from her solicitor, dad will read it out to you, we need to know what you think before we decide what to do.

Tom came through from the kitchen holding a lot of paper and an envelope, Joshua and Charlize were both fighting back tears, they only saw their aunt each Christmas but she was always so much fun.

Right kids, I know this is bad news but it has a brighter side, Tom said then continued, this is the solicitors letter, he has sent a copy and some other items to our local office in the high street, I will have to go down there later to sign for them, but if I read the main points to you, then I need to know what you think, okay.

Both children nodded agreement as they still couldn’t speak, Tom took the first page, A lot of this is legal stuff but to get to the main parts, it says: as the sole beneficiary of the estate, you can now sell the estate which comprises of one thousand acres of mainly forested land complete with a four bedroom house and outbuildings, but the will requests that you and your family move into the property and care for the trees and animals that live there.

If you decide to move in, the bank account associated with the property will become yours; this account is self-financing and will provide all you require for the foreseeable future, a word of warning, my assistant who checked that the property was secure says that the house is haunted, make of that what you will but he was frightened when he returned to the office.

Now kids I need your thoughts, if we move in it will mean home schooling and hard work, you must be ready for that, the house may or may not be haunted, but I think we would all enjoy it.

Charlize was the first to speak, would my friends be able to come and stay, Tom replied yes of course, so can Joshua’s, Charlize smiled, then I am for going, Joshua finally got his emotions under control, it is what auntie wants, I will investigate any haunting, we go, Charlize realised something, where is it? she said.

Tom and Katy both smiled, it is halfway up a mountain about three hundred miles from here, Katy said, and then she stood up and went to the kitchen to start preparing dinner.

Tom smiled, okay, decision made, I will nip down the solicitor’s office and get it sorted, after a cup of tea, Tom left for the town, Katy did a quick sandwich for lunch as Tom was not back, it was late in the afternoon when he returned carrying a large box.

The box sat on the lounge floor while Tom had a cup of tea and a biscuit then he opened it, he took out a blue envelope and handed it to Joshua, it was quickly opened, a birthday card, inside was his five pound note, opening the card he read it once, then a second time "Happy Birthday Joshua the Wizard, if you have this card you will soon be moving to your new home, in the box is a talisman, one for each of you,
